For commercial photography such as headshots, real estate, and other product images, pros are getting the job and selling the house or product for what it's worth. Cons? I honestly can't think of any. The money you'd spend on a photographer is paid back in the earnings, just like any good marketing.
Regarding personal photography like family portraits, newborns, etc, the cost is only a "con" if you don't do your research on the photographer you hire and/or don't value high-quality images of that moment in time (which is fine -- not everyone cares to have family pictures every year!).
I'm not really sure what this question is getting at, except maybe wondering if paying for photography is worth it.

Adobe Lightroom! I use that for 99% of my photo editing, Photoshop only when I need to be drastic. (I have Creative Cloud as I also do graphic design & video.)
