Dear Joshua,
Grays, warm, cool, dark, medium and light are here to stay. Other staying interior colors fall into the beige, taupe and off-white categories. These neutrals usually establish the base (the largest spaces; e.g. foyers/hall and stair wells, living rooms, etc.). I like to add interest to the base by introducing contrasting colors and/or wallpapers in adjoining rooms. Textured and/or textured/paint wallpapers are very nice in dining rooms, powder rooms or master bedrooms. Really, it's fun to let your creative feelings flow with wall finishes - as long as it is all well coordinated.
I hope/trust that you find my thoughts helpful. Best, Lynn Garelick, ASID, NCIDQ

Yes, yes and yes ... I have bought original art for myself and my clients. My feeling is that one buys original art, be it a painting, a sculpture, ceramic dish or vase, because it reaches out and touches you in a personal and intimate way. When I am looking for art for my clients, I always...

Yes, yes and yes ... I have bought original art for myself and my clients. My feeling is that one buys original art, be it a painting, a sculpture, ceramic dish or vase, because it reaches out and touches you in a personal and intimate way. When I am looking for art for my clients, I always include them in the search. It is a great way to get to know your client better; looking for what touches their soul opens new channels of communication, always a good thing!
I myself am an artist and consistently enter shows in my locale. It is always a thrill for me when one of my paintings sells. I feel someone out there is on the same wave length with me - a very comforting thought and feeling!

If I had more time (the most precious commodity!), I would attend even more networking events then I already do within my community for both business and personal reasons. Meeting a variety of people is the best way to expand my own knowledge of what is happening out in the community. In this way, I find activities that are interesting and worthwhile to participate in. And ... it always comes up ... I am asked what I do for a living ... I volunteer that I am an interior designer and that starts a conversation about people's homes immediately. I have garnered many jobs by showing up!

When I started my firm in 2001, I had been in the business for the previous 24 years, thus contacted many former clients that I had worked with over the years. I'm glad to say they were delighted to hear that I was now on my own. Over the past 17 years, these clients have hired me as their particular projects came up. Additionally, I have kept my website update, developed a good LinkedIn site and have a Houzz site. I have been a member, in fact, past president (2012-2013) of ASID and am still active in the organization. I belong to the local Chamber of Commerce and am on the boards of many local organizations as well as being an active member at my church. Through all of these activities in the community, I have garnered many new clients over the past 17 years. All of my clients are a terrific referral base. I thank them for always thinking of me when a friend or colleague asks them if they know of a good, reputable interior designer. The bottom line - is BE ACTIVE, BE CARING, BE INVOLVED in all of life that is going on at the moment. You win new clients and new friends continuously, which is a gift!

Dear Irena, The first thing I do when I start a project with a client is a careful interview wherein I ask a lot of questions to get a sense of the vision the client has for their project. Then I go to work to develop the scheme with floor plans, color choices, furniture, fabric etc. I keep the choices to three, no more. When I meet with the client with this first proposed scenario, I also carry a sketch pad and do 3D sketches. I have found that this process gives the client a good visual sense of the dream for their project. They can pick and choose from these first choices, combining items from each of the three schemes, to start the project. I hope/trust this answers your question. Best, Lynn
Dear Alan, two things make what I do so rewarding. Number one, meeting and getting to know a client and what their wishes/dreams are to make an attractive, comfortable environment for themselves and/or their family. I've met so many wonderful people over the years; they still call me up when...

Dear Alan, two things make what I do so rewarding. Number one, meeting and getting to know a client and what their wishes/dreams are to make an attractive, comfortable environment for themselves and/or their family. I've met so many wonderful people over the years; they still call me up when they have a new project. Number two, I get a great deal of satisfaction of taking a problem space and transforming it to a lovely, functional space for my clients. The results are always a win/win for my client and myself. Dear Jessica,
You offer a good array of items, all geared to furnishing a nice home. I make one suggestion - in many homes today, the office has become very important, given many people are working from home part-time of full-time. Even though most information is in the "cloud" today, it is still nice to have a good looking file cabinet or cabinets. These file cabinets can be incorporated in shelving, desk systems. Also nice is a big, nicely framed bulletin board.
I wish you all the best in the launch of your new company.
With best regards,

All of the suggestions below are excellent and spot on! I also suggest that you look into joining the CT Chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). This is an excellent conduit to meeting the interior designers in the area. Many designers/decorators are involved in selling the homes of their clients as the first step in preparing them for the move into their new abode. Staging, editing the current contents of the home to be sold would be a very valuable service for many designers.
