(more) Early in my travel agent career with Cruises Inc.,  I received a call regarding an opportunity to go on a fully paid 6 day tour of Paris and London for Celebrity Cruise Line.  I would be going with a small group of agents from around the country to see the extended tour itineraries that were available.  I was happy and proud to have been selected for this "mission".  However, they needed my decision immediately, and I would be leaving soon thereafter.  I would be traveling out of the country, alone, and sharing a room in Paris with another female agent.  With my husband's blessing,  I said yes, I would be happy to go. After I made the decision,  I was both thrilled and terrified!  The only country outside of the good old USA  I had been to was Canada, and we drove there. I decided to pack lightly as it was only 5 actual nights in the two cities.  I took one small suitcase and a mid-size purse that held my documents.   Soon I was kissing my hubby goodbye at the Buffalo airport.   I checked my suitcase and waited for my flight to be called.  Since it was an evening flight, I woke up to the smell of coffee as we were approaching Paris.  I followed the other passengers to the luggage claim area and watched as everyone was retrieving their luggage.  The crowds diminished until there were just a few of us, and then it was only  Me!   Looking around I noticed that even the immigration agent  had left.  I walked around to see if I could find anyone around to notify that my luggage was missing.  Eventually I noticed a small office.  I prayed there was someone in it to help me.  A gentleman who didn't speak or appear to understand English very well, listened to my frantic plea for assistance,  After quite a long time filling out paperwork, and letting them know the hotel I would be staying at in Paris,  I left the area to look for the driver who was hired to meet my plane.  I was told he waited a while and assumed I had missed my flight so he left! I now found myself at the Paris airport with no luggage, and no ride to the hotel. I had the name of the hotel, unfortunately, it was not located near the airport! It literally took all of the cash I had with me to get to the hotel which was almost an hour away.   I was relieved to see that some people were waiting for me to arrive.  I told them about my luggage issue, got my  room key and prepared to meet my new room mate.  I opened the door, the blackout curtains were drawn and my "roomie" was snoring.  I put on the light in the bathroom, and was in the act of relieving myself, when the lights went out. Pitch black.  I pulled myself together and tried the lights...nothing.  The only light I had was when I opened the door to the hall.  I noticed a maid down the hall and went over to her, now rambling about the light situation.  She didn't understand any English!  At this point, I grabbed her arm (gently, of course), directed her to my room, and with sign language showed her how the lights would go out.  She smiled at me, took my room card and placed it in a slot by the door.  When the card is in the slot, lights, TV and everything works. When you take your card to leave, everything shuts off.  It's a good thing, and is quite common now on newer cruise ships. Now I have time to think...not about what to wear for dinner, as I only have the clothes on my back.  I pray that my luggage is found soon. Two days have gone by, and I had figured it was time to wash the knit pantsuit that I wore for the trip.  It was supposed to be a quick dry "travel knit", so before I went to bed, I washed it.  We were to be at a 7:00 a.m. breakfast meeting, and I hurried to get ready in time.  The top of my outfit was nice and dry.  I  grabbed the pants.  They were not dry, but what else could I do? I put them on anyway.    We were halfway through breakfast when I looked down and saw a puddle forming by by feet!  I literally started   laughing out loud in the middle of someone's conversation.  Since everyone knew about my luggage issue, we all had a good laugh though I was really mortified!  The staff grabbed towels for the puddle, and helped to dry out the pant a bit more. We were getting ready to leave Paris for London that afternoon.  I had been getting updates about the efforts to find my missing suitcase, and after almost three full days, it had been found.  I would be getting it shortly before we were to leave Paris. It finally arrived and I noticed it had gone to three other COUNTRIES without me! London was wonderful.  I actually wore a different outfit every day, and enjoyed the ease of conversation with strangers.  Before I knew it, I was heading back home on British Airways.  I learned a lot about myself during this experience.  It seemed that whatever could go wrong, did.  Yet, here I am getting off the plane in Buffalo, being met by my loving husband who was shocked at my appearance.  I had contracted pink eye in both eyes, cut my foot which made me limp, and  without any shoes!  But that's another story.

The answer to this question is simple for me.  If you are the best...whether in business or athletics,  it means you have proven yourself.  Again, whether in business or athletics, you will be recruited by other franchises to join them...so you may end up in the "big leagues" anyway.   (more) The answer to this question is simple for me.  If you are the best...whether in business or athletics,  it means you have proven yourself.  Again, whether in business or athletics, you will be recruited by other franchises to join them...so you may end up in the "big leagues" anyway.

Consider this one of life's teachable moments.   In the end, the co-worker who betrayed your confidence will now be known to be office  "gossip", and may even be shunned by others you work with.  Be true to who you are,  and continue in the job you love. I miss ROMANELLO'S the most.  Hamburg has loads of restaurants, but the intimacy of the bar made for wonderful happy hour meetings with friends and business associates, and the restaurant had a "high end" appeal and good food too!
