If your main objective is to work with people you like, then poor customer service is unacceptable. If you just want a great final product, then you will tolerate poor people skills. Your decision needs to be in line with accomplishing your goal.
Personally, I want to work with people I like because I think that work should be fun, so I will always look for that first, then verify that they are good at what they do. Business is based on relationships and we tend to work with those we know, like and trust.
Awkwardness is discomfort. We should be building relationships with our clients and referral sources that are trust-based.
When you build a good relationship, you're willing to go out of your way to help one another. If you build those relationships, you'll never have to feel awkward about...

When you build a good relationship, you're willing to go out of your way to help one another. If you build those relationships, you'll never have to feel awkward about asking for a referral, or any other request.
Especially when you believe in the product or service that you're asking to be referred.

The first question to ask is, does this review have merit?
If someone left a negative review, we need to be open to the possibility that it was warranted and that we fell short somehow as an employer or vendor. If that's the case, we need to become the business worthy of excellent reviews.

If someone left a negative review, we need to be open to the possibility that it was warranted and that we fell short somehow as an employer or vendor. If that's the case, we need to become the business worthy of excellent reviews.
If the review is unwarranted or unfair, always reply right away and see what you can do to make it right. If it's totally out of left field, most sites will allow you to flag the review as inappropriate.
When it comes to reviews, monitor them. Ask your happy clients and employees to leave reviews about doing business with you. A bad review isn't the end of the world, if people can see that it is the exception and not the norm. Implement a system of asking customers for a review after you've done business and you should be just fine in short order.

There's a lot of great advice on this thread already.
If I can add: Ask yourself everyday, how can I add more value?

Before anyone has even paid you, what can you do to make their lives better? How can you solve their problems? No matter the industry, the better we are at adding value, the more people want to do business with us.
We make ourselves worthy of others' time an money by providing extraordinary value.
Of course, it all starts with happy customers.
Reach out to your best customers and send them link to your listing with instructions on how to leave a review. If you need a template for that, reach out and I'll forward you what I sent to my customers. I went from 0 reviews to 10 5-star reviews...

Great marketing shouldn't really be disruptive. It should be as natural and intuitive as possible. If we're helping our customers solve problems, we aren't disrupting them, we're helping.

Jay Conrad Levinson always recommended spending 7-10% of revenue on marketing, so it would be good to start working up to that.
After that, if Facebook is getting results for you, invest more into that.
Try a few different things. I'd reach out to those forums and depending on who posted what, offer to do interviews, give away a product sample, reach out to commenters directly to send them to a landing page where they can put in their email address.

You want repeat business, the best way to do that is to grow your email subscription list. The second best way is to grow your social media presence. They work together to help one another, but you need to have a way to CAPTURE those people's information when you go to reach out to those forums.
