What do you do if an employee uses a sick day when he runs out of payed time off?

Unfortunately you can't not pay the employee but having a serious talk with them and noting in your records is key. If this becomes a pattern then letting the employee go would be prudent. But noting all of the transgressions is key. Honesty is the best policy on all sides of the table.
