This number is searchable on the state site. While it's not illegal to use a non licensed contractor it is illegal for that contractor to be doing the work. Simply ask them for their license number and if they refuse they are not licensed.

These adjustments should be done before prices are stated and never after work has been started. I'm not sure how often this takes place overall but I would bet that most established businesses only employ bartering (negotiating) during the sale of larger contracts as a part of meeting a clients needs within certain established guidelines. Smaller jobs should be accepted or declined by the customer before any work begins to eliminate hard feelings or misunderstandings. Good communication practices should always be used and certainly get a signature before the work begins.

In a situation where the company could loose money on a job would you be willing to withhold information or slightly alter your description of a problem?  If they say yes them they are willing to lie and shouldn’t be hired. Character flaw.   (more) In a situation where the company could loose money on a job would you be willing to withhold information or slightly alter your description of a problem?  If they say yes them they are willing to lie and shouldn’t be hired. Some new vendors are paid with checks until the system is set up but as a general rule we are moving away from them. Business cards are good to put out on counters and card racks and I do carry a few for that old school client I occasionally run into. I am moving towards picking the type of client I want to work with instead of them picking me. I get better paying jobs that way with better communication and overall relationships. My goal is to add value to them not just take their money. Then I can ask who do you know that I need to know. That’s the kind of word of mouth that works and can really set you up as a professional.

I would do my own inspection and if I had internal insulation I would probably want it sealed because when the brush disturbs it then you have fiberglass coming out of the vents specially if its an older system. Old insulation gets very brittle plus it harbors mold. UV lamps do wonders there but are an added expense to have the bulbs changed yearly. I am considering VRF because of the versatility and the efficiencies are so much higher they pay for themselves in a few years and are easy to maintain. No ductwork to clean.
