Hire the "A" players and treat them like an important member of the company. " A" players want a career and not just a job! Employees want to feel successful, feel valued and depending on the level, have room to grow. Employees do not work harder with an explosive, overly demanding boss who degrades them. Look for candidates with consistent employment history. It is proven that hiring the "A" player will save the company money in time and repeated effort and will result in a much more profitable business. Fine tune your interview questions. Educate your employees with current information and trends. If possible, hire at different levels and not everyone that will want a promotion in one year. Write job descriptions and written details of every part of the job so if someone leaves, the new person can train with someone else and when left on their own, have the details of the function so they will not have to interrupt everyone all day. Stay in touch with what they are thinking. Have your guidelines in writing so they know what is acceptable or not in your office. Everyone who wrote here is giving a tip that worked for them. "A" players cost more upfront but you save much more than the difference in salary down the road.
