Family has to be the number one priority. Our vocation/job supports our home and our friends support our relaxation time, for some, but the family has to be your foundation. The use of electronics has interfered with the overall communication in families so I recommend putting them down for meals and times of family events. Putting family first is pivotal to overall well-being and mental health. Your family should always have your back and support you through good times and bad - they should be consistent and reliable for all of us. With teens, find what interests them and learn about those things - have them engage in activities with you; know their friends and their friends parents. Make your children a priority regardless of their age.

Think about happy days and times as bad days are only temporary and will pass. A smile will make your day easier and it will get better!

I think that, at times, people are embarrassed or ashamed to share their issues with a stranger (aka neutral third party). I always complement clients who come in as the first call is the hardest to make - that they cannot resolve their issues with the tools they have between them. I also...

I think that, at times, people are embarrassed or ashamed to share their issues with a stranger (aka neutral third party). I always complement clients who come in as the first call is the hardest to make - that they cannot resolve their issues with the tools they have between them. I also think that finances can be a barrier to reaching out for help. Years ago, I wrote an article entitled "What is your happiness worth?". In it I discuss those with expensive cars, shoes, vacations but do not "invest" in their relationship. An issue of priorities.

We are all responsible for how we feel as well as being responsible enough to reach out for help when we are not feeling as we want to.

My suggestion is to become involved in the community and local religious groups, schools, etc. Volunteer some time within the community and provide services on a sliding scale to meet all community members needs. Best of luck.

In my business (Marriage and Family Therapy), I try to have all appointments take place timely, keep my office clean and well stocked with water, coffee and chocolates, treat my clients with respect and dignity and always follow-up/return calls in a timely fashion. It is my experience that these few things are important to showing your client/customer that they are valued and respected and that their money is being well spent on a quality service. I also only promise that which I can provide and never work out of my scope of practice or give clients false hope of an outcome I do not know. Honesty and Integrity are key.
Thank you. Reach out if you think I can be of further assistance. I have worked with this population for almost 30 years. Have a great week.
