About Us

Woodfired function pottery, abstract sculpture and drawings made by Cynthia Morelli are available in an intimate setting at the Back Porch Gallery at her home, designed and built by her husband, Taro.

How We Got Started

Cynthia Morelli has a BFA in Ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred and has been working in clay full time since moving to Homer, Alaska in 1993. She lived five years in Japan, studying Butoh and Calligraphy before settling in Homer with her husband, Taro Sasakura. They've built a home and studio outside of town together that showcases both rural Alaska and Japanese aesthetics.

Woodfiring creates a dynamic and varied surface on the work. Pots and sculptures fired this way have a quiet depth of glaze - both applied and from the melting ash deposits that come from burning the wood as fuel.
