Was on staff of Browning Ferris Industries when they had their first ever layoff in Oct. 1989. They released me on Wednesday afternoon and hired me as a consultant Friday afternoon - since I was the only person in the company who managed their Business to Business(B2B) marketing program! Having just helped a small Louisiana company do that successfully in Houston, here's a brief answer.  Identify, join and become active in the appropriate, and sometimes ancillary, industry associations. A Nurse Paralegal company coming to Houston joined Houston Assoc. of Legal Professionals and... (more) Having just helped a small Louisiana company do that successfully in Houston, here's a brief answer.  Identify, join and become active in the appropriate, and sometimes ancillary, industry associations. A Nurse Paralegal company coming to Houston joined Houston Assoc. of Legal Professionals and Houston Paralegal Assoc. and visited a couple of other related groups.  They became a sponsor of one (Monthly meeting recognition) and quickly partnered with another member firm which already had an established "IN" with the law firms THEY wanted to visit.  In a relatively short period of time, they were recognized as an 'active player' in the field and by the participants they wanted to influence.  This can also be done through Chambers of Commerce and in some cases Fraternal Organizations like Rotary, Lions, KC's etc.

(more) I'm old enough to remember when there were NO women in traditionally "Male oriented" industries and when those industries were "Forced" to open their doors to women there were wholesale protestations and predictions of "failure" of this effort.  As it turned out, given the female propensity to LISTEN FIRST, then present the product/service (versus the male "Here's what I've got, it's good, how many do you want) many a female salesperson/businessperson began to run rings around their male counterparts.  This is a long way around saying that when, as a female, you have a passion for, interest in or desire to excel in ANY line or work or endeavor, GO FOR IT.
