I have been networking for almost 40 years. It was particularly useful when I was an independent contractor. But, also useful when I worked in house as an employee. Its a nothing to loose and everything to gain scenario. And, its a simple philosophy. You help people and they help you. The people who take your help but never return the favor are not in your network and of no benefit. The people that do follow the philosophy will both be friends for life and sources of opportunities for life. An independent contractor goes from job to job. On most projects the lead broker is generally looking for people to fill the project slots, especially the short term projects of 90 days or less. When they hire you they may ask if you know anyone who might be interested. Bingo. You put the names of your fellow independent contractors who are also looking for work into the pot. They generally get work too. Its a win win scenario and is very effective. Stay healthy.
You throw work to them when you can and they do the same for you. That is the way it is supposed to operate in the land business.

The crisis and drop in price of oil has reduced the network to no effect. No work will kill any network for work. Independent contractors are being destroyed. When the business comes back many of them will be gone and not coming back. The labor shortage will be even worse than it was...

If you have a lot of turnover, that usually means either you are not paying your staff enough to keep them or management issues drive them away. Happy people will stick with you. Best place to get qualified personnel is from someone else.
