I use a combination of a merchant account with Elavon (which is tied to my POS system) and Paypal for online transactions. Thankfully I actually like Elavon, because it would cost more to use my POS system if I didn't use them. I have found that most processors cost AT LEAST 3%. Don't fall for ...

Don't fall for the "we can save you money" pitch. it's a straight up lie and some can cost you a whole lot more. Paypal fees go up the higher the amount of the transaction
Always ask if there's a contract, what are the fees if you want to change before it's up, is there a limit on the amount of a transaction and what the equipment costs. There are almost always hidden charges and some of those companies are truly horrible to work with. There is a way to check ratings online.

All of these answers apply to many people.. cost, big pharma, high priced food recommendations that when used, turn out to be horrible for our pets. I have several each dogs and cats and they generally live into their teens. I vaccinate when they are young (or when they arrive) and then sparingly since I feel we vaccinate pets WAY too much. I did have a dog with cancer years ago who told me he was on a study panel regarding vaccines and that they just don't need as much as we give them. I haven't had an animal get sick with anything it could have been vaccinated against.
I will not feed one of the big name (vet recommended) brands of food because it makes them sick ( I feed a very good food made locally) and they go to the vet if they are sick I do have an excellent vet who does not try to pad the bill with every test known to man and tries very hard to make the pet well. I do my own vaccines when I can and generally use a low cost clinic for those ones I can't and for spay/neuters.
I think the short answer is that many vets are not advocates for the animals and their owners.. they are out to pad their own pocket no matter the cost or results.
