How do you deal with an employee whom you know has the knowledge and skill to be a great sales agent, but lacks the drive and motivation to do so?

Talk to them. They simply may not be interested in Sales. You say they have the knowledge and "skill"...what does that mean? Have you observed them in a selling situation? It is not for everyone, and you can't force it. You can only present the opportunity and the support (scripting, role play, incentives), but you can't force it. You may end up forcing them out. It sounds like you value this person...is there another role that is a better fit?
