Definitely classics.  When I was a kid, my dad persuaded me to memorize Kipling's "If" and "Norman and Saxon AD 1100," and I was hooked...as I think he sort of expected I'd be.  Actually, I can still recite both, and along with them works by Poe, Longfellow, Shakespeare, and even the Apostle Paul. Anywhere at all--that's the beauty of it.   Inspiration's not specific to a time or place.  I often have my best ideas while driving, and some of my best writing's been done while I'm pulled off to the side of the road.  I wrote a great sonnet one time on the shoulder of Route 219 South between... I don't write a lot of fiction anymore, but when I did I tried to craft wholly imaginary characters, and assign to them distinctive character traits I'd observed in other people.  I always found that those unique qualities and even character flaws were, and are, the same elements which make us all human...and therefore also a practical tool to make a fictional character more persuasive and believable.
