Are you thinking small or big?  If small, then word of mouth is great but limiting.  Keep up with social media daily, do targeted mailings, emails and utilize sites that are free or inexpensive to get your word out.  If big, join groups, clubs, social sites like Meetup where you get to meet a lot of prospects at once.  I solicit frequently, colleges, retirement homes, work groups.  Do what you feel comfortable at now and expand as you have the manpower and funds.
