Thanks for the responses. Being a small business owner myself, who provides printing for other small business owners, our focus is on helping the customer get marketing materials that actually work for them. This means sitting down with the customer, addressing their goals, and consulting with them. What good is a business card, post card, or brochure that doesn't produce results? Sometimes this means we provide ideas, copy writing services, photography, and lay out and design services. Small business owners can't afford to hire an advertising agency, so we try to fill that void for them.
You do not get this kind of service from on-line printers. They are fine as long as you are comfortable with their out-of-the-box formats, and designs. Those can work for a lot of people.
We've found that local printers are a little more expensive, but by the time you add in postage and handling, etc, it's not that much more. Also be sure to shop around and get pricing from your local printer. You may not be getting as good of a deal on-line as you think you are.
You actually get what you pay for in peace of mind, service, and dependability like Nate and Lynn have commented on.
