The formulas or algorithms do not need to be perfect, just fair, reasonable and agreed upon in advance.

(more) Dear Exhausted and Determined,   I can relate with your situation and empathize with the fears and concerns of losing your business.  For most of us entrepreneurs, our businesses are our income and our life (at least our primary activity in this life), and our self image and self esteem become identified with our business.  Consequently, disability and failure in business can feel as devastating and frightening as total failure in life.  The fact is that we will all eventually fail.  We will all become unable to perform in business, sports, family, society and any area because our physical bodies won't function; bluntly speaking, our bodies will die. So while we are able to function physically, we should align our values, priorities and activities with the eternal spirit.  This brings up the ultimately most important conversation, but it is on a different topic than your letter.    Most of our businesses, as entrepreneurs are actually personally operated trades.  Our trades are usually skilled or specialized in the services and products we offer as well as in the marketing and management we use.  This tends to makes us personally valuable, even indispensable to the business.  So, if we don't plan for business continuity and replace ourselves our businesses will probably die with our death or decline in our ability and energy.  We should answer the following question early in our business careers, if possible:    "How can I operate with a business model that makes my business self-sustaining and will give me lifetime (and possibly inter-generational) residual income without me personally working?"  Doing this will require adaptation and change-management, which involve different skill sets than the ones we used to start and grow our businesses.  We could possibly consider mentees, contractors and/or technology to run our businesses; or even consider selling our businesses while they are highly profitable.   Best wishes to you, Exhausted and Determined, and to all my fellow business owners.
