This is a reality we have been dealing with at Blue Water Networks for years. Our first Ransomware attack on one of our "lower end clients" was in 2009. From this, we learned quite a bit and how to deal with separating permissions in such a way that users do not have access to backup / archive folders. With user auditing, we also weeded out "default accounts" that copier companies placed on others servers. Over the years, we've developed a very nice "in-house" file sync system that synchronizes "work shares" to our secure cloud system and in essence makes our clients critical work directories ransomware proof. Even if they are infected, we can revision the files back to their original state within minutes (not hours or days). Although this is one of our protection services - we also employ many more preventive solutions as well - firewall, advanced threat protection, malware inspection, group policies, AD security measures and regular system audits, just to name a few.

As a business owner, it has been an amazing two year run. All of my companies have reached record numbers. Now that we have the Democrats in control of congress.... well, here we go again with roadblocks and shutdown political games... It seems to me that their focus is on the 2020 presidential election and not the interests of the country. I'd begin calling the newly elected democrat congress members and ask them to stop taking trips and NEGOTIATE. That will help end this shutdown quickly.
My second tip: diversify your business - Government should NEVER be depended upon for income. Programs end without notice all the time.

Using your gmail for marketing or newsletters is a bad choice - you could easily become flagged as a spammer and then not be able to receive important emails / regular corporate communications. Secondly, FREE and any level of human support unfortunately do not co-exist. If you have 1500 clients, any fees for your email services are nominal in comparison to your income, unless of course YOU are working for "free". We provide newsletter/email service on a flat rate fee depending on how many emails you want to send out to your client base per month - don't care how many people you have in your mailing lists. As an example, 25,000 emails per month is $35 per month. You will also get analytics based on their actions with the emails (opens, reads, forwards, trips to your website or included links, etc) Delivery rates, number of times read, etc. The last issue is - are these customers requesting to be on your mailing list - or are these purchased lists?

Considering that most IT sales consultants approach average business owners using Network Detective, claiming it is a diagnostic tool and showing them how awful the default report is, I don't recommend just allowing any "joe IT guy" through the door to conduct such and evaluation. Unless "joe IT guy" knows the parameters of the ongoing IT scenario for said client, and what MSP management systems are in place and adjust the report accordingly - it unfortunately is a "he said - she said" sales scenario. Yes, we had a client fall prey to this kind of marketing, which ended up costing my client (who returned) about $15K in damages to is IT systems and lost business revenue. Upon recovery, we found the remains of the Network Detective tool and Microsoft Baseline Security. The consultant had only been in the business for about 3 years and knew VERY little about basic IT administration. Sad scenario.
