I had an office in my house but I mostly write on the sofa. My husband missed me being in the office so much.
If you are very distractible, a dedicated space for your writing with equipment and reference books will help a lot. I did use mine for a long time.

I edit ten times before handing it to my editor. In one of those edits, I read the entire book aloud. You would be surprised how many errors you find.

I have slightly different advice for aspiring romance writers. The important part is to study your genre. There is Rom-Critters for romance writers. I started out with both critique groups and am a pro member of SFWA.
