Owning a restaurant the move to no tipping and paying $15 an hour will become a necessity and the losers will be both the staff and owners equally. Staff will make less and if able to go on unemployment will do so because they can make the same amount or more and not have to work. Owners will have a difficult time hiring for these reasons as well.
In all segments of business that rely on lower income workers, there is a good chance wholesale and retail prices will increase to meet pay increases and or less workers will be needed to provide services or product. Companies need to provide continued and increased profitability to their investors and shareholders.
My business pays commissions based on sales, ranging from 70% to 90% tiered on volume sold. Am I going to be affected, I would think so. Businesses will close and taxes will increase to pay for things like unemployment and other government programs and giveaways that are going to be needed to keep the economy going.
The issue is the elite dictating to the elite corporate ownership.

The solution would be you set up virtual cooking solutions where you walk the client through the process, (i.e. cooking classes). You need to reinvent yourself. You can do both individual as well as group sessions. You would charge for each class presented where you can also discuss nutrition. As an added feature you can order the ingredients for home delivery as well. Check with a local restaurant to see if you can rent / share space and deliver from there. You need to think outside the box, adapt and engage.

Having been hit by a tornado followed within a week with the affects of the Virus I've had plenty to reflect on as far as life and business. I have found that life is actually better since I have time to work on personal things and help neighbors and help those in need move forward. I think about business but I have been working from home for years as a consultant so the only bump was being without internet for a couple of weeks. I spend time finding those in need of technical services and planning and assisting them generally for free. I write some code to bring in enough money to eat but generally when I go to Sams Club I spend more on food and personal items for those that need it and can't afford it. I have found that most of my business relationships are hurting more than they want to admit so I try to help them understand how to move forward, especially those in the restaurant business, I am an expert in credit card payments. Most people that sell credit card Merchant processing are hurting and have seen their residuals drop 60%-70% but things should get better as business open.

There are several important factors for operating a business on line but the three most important are (1) Understanding what drives business to you on line and (2) A Web Site that displays and tells exactly what you do and how to get in touch with you and (3) Once a contact has been made being able to response quickly in a reasonable amount of time. Each of these factors is totally dependent on each other and independently can drive business elsewhere if not implemented correctly.
Since you will have your own website it should have it's own domain name and you should use the domain name for email. You should also register you site with as many search engines, bulletin boards and external links as possible, (Yahoo, Google, Yellow Pages, ... are prime examples), within your industry. If you really into driving business from the internet you will need to hire someone that understands Internet Marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or perhaps better yet an SEM (Search Engine Marketing).
The process will take a lot of time your time to implement and keep up. It's also not cheap even if you do it yourself. The Search Engines costs can be expensive especially if you are going to implement a "By the Click" program to drive business.
One important thing to remember is that you must get back to those that connect to you. Delay's in returning requests and calls only drive people away, time is important. Instead of meeting in person you can try Zoom, which is very effective and free in most cases for remote meetings.

Credit card processing is my business. I have written software for many service providers that calculate their profits and pay their sales people commissions and residuals.
Because of everything going with Covid-19 I'll provide processing for anyone that covers processing cost which is interchange and card brand fees and transaction costs. There will be no markup period. If you need a device that works off your phone unattached so you can hand it to you client so the can swipe the card I'll give it to you free. After 90 days rates will be increased to an acceptable discount rate which we can discuss and review, it will NOT exceed 25 basis points, (the industry average is 35 basis points). We can discuss cash discounting but in most cases do you really want to charge another 4% to your customer at this time.
What I do is work with a client to understand his business and problems. For example I worked with a butcher that was sold on Cash Discounting to save money. It turned out that he wasn't saving anything because Cash Discounting can't be done with a Debit Transaction or with American Express. He also had a number of complaints from customers regarding a 4% surcharge and many refuse to accept this and left. Visa sent him a letter stipulating that his surcharging was illegal and that if it didn't stop they were going to fine him and shut him down. Because I work with a number of Processors I was able to get the problem resolved and get him better rates than he had before making the switch.
I don't sell used cars and I don't actively sell, I generally provide a service on a referral basis. If you just need answers I will be more than happy to discuss your situation and provide you with suggestions regardless if I provide you with processing services.

Of course it also depends on ease of use not just by you but the person(s) that you are going to be interfacing with. I will say that the last one i will use is Skype, it's hard to use, updates frequently and spams the heck out of you. Best bang for the buck is Zoom. Another thing is not everyone uses apple so facetime should not be considered. If you have MS Office Team works pretty good as well. Once again Zoom is very good and is free but has user and meeting time limits or inexpensive for added time and users.

I've had a number of life changing events mostly because of stupid people. I now have to get up early, real early to get in line and hope that I can get items that I need to live a somewhat normal life under restrictive conditions.
I am not only a person that is effected by COVID-19 but my home is unlivable because a tornado damaged it on March 2. So I've been shuffling from Hotel to Hotel and in between my sons home. My home won't be ready for another 6-8 weeks but I finally found a 1 bedroom apartment. it was easier to find an apartment than to find toilet paper and paper towels. I was finally able to buy some milk the other day but when leaving there was a mother with little ones that was unable to get any so I gave my half gallon to her. There's always tomorrow. But after about 3 weeks there's still no TP or paper towels to be seen. This is going to be a very interesting experience.
As for work I get on line and keep my clients up to date which is something I do as long as they need me. In some cases where they are an old client I do it for free if they are hurting. As long as I can pay my bills I see nothing wrong with paying forward or backwards or whatever it is. Pretty soon I guess I'll have some additional time on my hands so I became a CASA volunteer to prepare to keep busy with a worthy cause. Finished training so moving on but of course that is derailed somewhat since all the courts are closed and face to face contact has been suspended.
Did a paper on the actual cost of processing credit cards and how greed in the industry has increased 3 fold. Everyone in the industry is "Selling" a NO COST processing plan called Cash Discount. Most blogs within the industry have individuals boasting how it is making them RICH and it is. They provide the merchant with a low cost if done correctly by charging the cardholder up to 4% for using the card and the merchant doesn't get charged at all. The rules are surcharging can be done but can't be done on a Debit Card or American Express. What some suppliers are doing is forcing the Debit Card to be a Swipe Credit transaction so they are now given a 4% surcharge as well. Where does all the surplus income go, it goes to your credit card processing company and sales person which actually means that they are racking in 1.5% to 2% on average for each transaction. Just think about this when you go shopping and see a "Handling Charge" or some other name for a surcharge. If it's so bad to pay on average 2.25% for taking a credit card then my suggestion is to raise your prices instead of losing clients.
Have a good life, read a book and enjoy what you have.

If you can show you were working and that you received a paycheck then you can collect unemployment, ownership doesn't mean anything as long as you paid taxes and have a W-2 or something to prove you were a Paid Employee. Your company must be a Corporation and pay unemployment tax. For example I am a consultant with an LLC, therefore I am not eligible for unemployment even though the business is considered and treated as a Corporation for tax purposes.
You cannot collect unemployment while you are working regardless if you are getting paid or not. Also you will have to contact or provide proof that you have sent your resume to a number of employees, this is done from the State Employment Web site. Each week you will then have to fill out a questionnaire from the website where you will summarize your attempt to find paid employment. At one time I owned a restaurant which was a C Corporation but I never paid myself, therefore I was not eligible for unemployment.
The Unemployment process is very time consuming in the beginning since you may have to build your resume on their site regardless if you have a better one. This resume will be used to send to potential businesses that will have filter based on your experiences, which works at times but is way off base at other times. Once this is done you will most likely spend about 4-6 hours a week sending out resumes.
Also remember there is a 2 week wait before any payments will begin so you need to apply as quickly as possible.

There are a couple of things I would recommend staying away from and those they tie in you account to things like Life Insurance and things you don't need. I would stay away from Wells Fargo for any account type and beware of Bank of America Merchant Services even though the bank is OK for an account. I use SunTrust since it is regional and I have a lone below published Prime because I use them for everything. The important think is using a bank where you trust the people you are going to interface with and I like a face to face relationship.
