My work with individual and business clients for coaching and problem solution is always evolving. You must always use the psychology of the circumstances to offer your clients solutions in the way they want them. These days people want to be treated in a fair kind way, while being provided with absolute honesty and practical solutions in a convenient way. All businesses should be molding their structure in that way.

My job is to be part of the network people lean on. I am talking with people about how we must realize we don't control everything around us. You have to accept reality and roll with the punches as efficiently and intelligently as possible. So instead of fretting about the DOOM, you manage it and have some patience and courage. But then stress how there are going to be some opportunities for change that you must take to survive and thrive. That sounds too slick....not intentional. What I mean is some businesses will actually end up better off than before if they see the new opportunities and change themselves to take advantage. Best example would be the restaurants who were struggling before with sparse dine in service, but have now gone all out with booming take out businesses tailored to a take out type of menu and packaging. More units sold at a lower cost.
Clients are often stressed out, busy, and distracted. I have to read them and their situation very quickly and immediately jump into their life and situation, hitting the ground running. Then they will often start with what they want, but I have to be able to quickly see what they need.

CLARITY AND FOCUS. Clearly define your problem or concern. Are you just scared? Or you don't know how to do something specific? Or you are over-thinking something to which there is no solution but work and time? Keep it simple. Define your problem. It is either confidence based issue, or lack of clarity on your issues, or a technical issue. For technical issues, seek an expert on that issue. For everything else, break everything down into clear pieces, think like a customer, and then proceed with the best solution. That's the focus part. If you are scared, go pet your dog. If you are not sure how your customers think, go ask them. Your job is just to think clearly, define all your issues, and implement the solutions.

The nepotism you describe is a cancer in that business. It creates a toxic work environment and kills any enthusiasm or motivation that outside employees would have for working there. Those kinds of businesses are only useful if you "need a job". You cannot have a "career" at a place like that. You should be using them as they are using you, and position your resume and yourself for a move elsewhere on your own timing and terms. Any business, even family owned, should be fostering a fair and productive environment that is healthy and motivating to all employees, including those not related to the boss or family. Family businesses that are run professionally and fair tend to survive longer because they don't depend on a few family members who may not even be as qualified.

Blindly sending your kid to get get a 4 year degree "just because" is only for the very wealthy now. Most of us can't afford to do that. I believe these days it's important to tune into your child as far as their interests, desires, goals, talents, and intentions. If you can afford to drop $200K to give them a fun life experience and a four year piece of paper they may not use or might not be relevant to them, by all means do it. But if you have limited funds and need to use it wisely, consider more targeted efforts. Many kids can get what they need to get started faster at local colleges. Many of them would benefit more from a business start-up investment. Others may have no clue what to do and would benefit from several months of traveling. About 6 months of traveling the world is more valuable than partying in a dorm for 4 years, plus much cheaper, plus usually allows the child to find themselves and develop interests and contacts. THEN they can get whatever education is most relevant to their interests and goals in a more targeted effective way. I know in the past everyone just blindly "went to college", but with education costs being so high, and many college graduates unable to even get a job afterward, it pays to think more carefully and use more targeted approaches on a case by case basis.

I think you might consider becoming a supplier for a large retailer, whether it be bricks & mortar or online. Do lots of research and googling to find all larger retailers who sell what you produce. Then approach them with your story and your products....and yes the story is important in this case. See if they want to carry your product-line in their catalog or store inventory. Many large retailers desperately seek product, especially during Christmas season. I knew someone whose small product made it into the catalog of a very large retailer, and he turned it into a huge business. Obviously I would also encourage you to continue doing what you love with your own website and marketing, but remember your photos need to be amazing and zoomable, and your purchasing procedure needs to be easy, transparent, and seamless. Never give up on your dreams. Just find a new way to reach them.

When family members are working together in business, it is very important the relationship be professional and respectful. This means the customer comes and everyone needs to stay in their lane. If this is impossible or creates problems, then family should not be working together. I have found family businesses work best when each family member has their own "business unit" they are responsible for. Each member respects the other as the expert in that area. Again...people need to stay in their own lane, which means the lanes need to be well defined. Respect comes into play when you are dealing with parent/child....meaning....the child who thinks they can do it better needs to stay in their lane and not bully their parent, and the parent who thinks they are more experienced and know more, need to stay in their lane and let their child run their part of the business or their function. Business is for providing services and products and making money. If you are looking for tender family moments, go to Disneyland together or have a Sunday dinner. At home, the parent can be the parent, and child the child, but at the office, each is their own professional team member in charge of their own part of the operation, with mutual respect between team members. And if one person is not doing well in their area of the business, then there needs to be a change of some sort, just like in any company. But my advice is that if relationships are breaking due to the business, then find a way to separate business-wise so that your family remains intact and strong.

I believe working hard is only one small part of the entire equation. A person can work amazingly hard non-stop for months at chiseling a tunnel through a mountain, and will never succeed. In fact, if we work hard at the wrong thing, the wrong way, we are actually wasting our time and resources.
A person must set an achievable productive goal, put into place the correct plan of action, work very hard at that plan of action, anticipate and adjust to any external factors that get thrown at them, and in addition must adjust to any problems and misfortune, THEN a person has a good chance at success. In this "equation", "working hard" is only one of the elemental factors.
A person must take into account all elemental factors in order to succeed. The Hunter Equation states: Future Outcome = Intent + Actions + External Forces + Random Luck. "Working hard" would just be a sub-function of "Actions".

The advice already given is excellent. Here are your three main concerns listed in order of priority: 1 You need to be allowed to grieve and heal. You come first. You must take care of yourself so that you can go on to live a productive life and find happiness in life again. This is what your son would want for sure.
2 Honoring your son's memory in the way that is most appropriate to you. You can honor him in your own way, and multiple ways. It does not have to be thru a very time-consuming organization if that is too much for you. There are many ways for you to carry his memory forever and honor him.
3 The non-profit you started comes 3rd. You can only do the best you can, and you should be transparent with everyone if you are struggling and there will be delays in certain things. Don't let this organization be a burden to you, or own you, or control you. Just tell people what is happening so they can understand the your personal struggle and any financial struggle. Then keep working on this over time. This might boom a year from now or 2 years from now. Does not have to be perfect this month or next.
So as you can see, I believe your healing should be the #1 focus right now. Thus the dozens of business reasons and suggestions for dealing with the financial concerns of the non-profit are not totally relevant at the moment. You must do things in correct order, starting by strengthening yourself. You need to heal, you can, and you will. Allow yourself the time and resources necessary to do this.
