Does anyone out there remember JJ Newbury, or Woolworth’s and now Sears went bankrupt on us recently!
Well I grew up in Beverly Hills and the entire central business district from Giorgios, to the Daisy club on Rodeo Drive; and Burdsals as well as Martindales on little Santa Monica Blvd have vaporized. I taught manners and dancing for Gloria Monaghan at the BH Cotillion between 1967 and 1972 in Doug Hansen’s Daisy Club.
I remember getting model making supplies as a kid AND sipping on an ice cream sundae in the JJ Newbury store. Who could have predicted that Baskin Robbins 31 flavors closed a generation ago, and would be replaced with the Palm restaurant on Canon ? Woolworth’s preceded Staples by a generation and Rudnicks (a young man’s clothier) on Canon, closed its doors across the street from Jorgensen’s green grocery to relocate over the hill in Encino.
And of course, two of our beloved theatres were demolished: on Wilshire and Canon as well as the Beverly Drive onion domed theatre which was replaced with the Geogio restaurant, and a grand hotel.
In the restaurant category Nics’ on Canon and Kate’s on the Wilshire/Doheny corner were old haunts of mine and both remain empty now as hoary, ghost filled unfinished dust collectors waiting for their next chapter to be designed. My imagination does have the lingering taste of the coffee crunch layered cake from Blums (Beverly Drive).
As an architect I mourn the loss of the iconic restaurant Kate Mantilini for which I served as Morphosis’ project architect. Though the restaurant is gone, I testified at the Cultural landmarks commission and fortunately was able to get the building landmarked.
With the exception of Sears (because one did not exist within the confines of our city limits) I miss them all.
