I have a small cash-based, wellness-oriented private practice and the biggest struggle is to get folks to understand why it is worth it to invest in their health (even if/when insurance won't likely cover it)... Absolutely! long term stress can contribute to weight gain, adrenal fatigue, insulin resistance, heart issues, and other problems. It can age us faster and make life less enjoyable which also reduces the quality of life. I love empowering people with knowledge, be it knowledge about exercise or the appropriate movement modality to keep them active despite pain, knowledge about nutrition to help them reach and maintain their ideal weight (i.e. NOT diets!), knowledge about how to move well so they can move in all the ways that bring them joy and keep them healthy, knowledge about lifestyle changes such as reducing stressors, sleep hygiene, and other concepts to help them take care of themselves so that they do not feel dependent on me or any other provider for "maintenance." I love seeing them have and "ah-ha" moment as they learn!!!

We now understand that many of the findings that have been labeled pathological for decades are "normal" findings and that giving our clients/patients that information can scare them into thinking they are "broken"...Even the knowledge of genetics has some people believing they cannot escape their mother/father's arthritis. Genetics are only part of the picture for how one shows up in our office. Giving someone information about their health prospects should be as positive as is practical rather than using fear tactics to get them in our office (especially repeatedly!). Obviously, if something is life-threatening, we have an obligation to make them aware of the options they have, but musculoskeletal imaging has proven to be a less-than-honorable predictor of pain and disability in our patients.

I created a local like-minded network soon after opening my practice. I give a discount on the initial visit to people referred from within that network as well as to my former clients and some other select providers. I also do select pro-bono work. To answer your other question of how many modalities do I offer, I guess it depends on how you count them...many! :)

We have a malnourished, yet obese population due to eating too many processed foods and too many animal products both of which contribute to an acidotic state. Many Americans are opposed to eating (or even trying!) vegetables which are the answer to the acidotic state as they are alkaline. Movement matters a lot too, but as someone said "You cant exercise or supplement your way out of a bad diet." These issues both have an effect on other epidemics such as chronic pain--inflammatory states and lack of movement are definite contributors. We must interact and intervene on all levels with our clients. Even the World Health Organization says we need to be treating people from a BioPsychoSocialSpiritual (BPSS) Model and that is the well-rounded approach I try to take with all of my clients here at Whole Health Physical Therapy.

I do not want any administration or insurance company dictating that to me. That is why this current practice is a non-insurance practice. I hope that clients who choose my practice will partner with me for their Whole Health rather than being manipulated by a system that may not serve them due to its constraints. I truly love teaching and empowering my clients and this needs to be done on an individual basis. Having my own practice allows me to deliver this!
