How We Got Started

I started up my company during the down market. Rental property management fueled my company for the first few years. When everyone was holding on tight to their money and no one spending their money it was rough times for many. Many homeowners lost their homes and became renters. Many sad stories from these unfortunate folks. But I was lucky enough to become one of the trusted and most used Contractors in Snohomish County for Rental maintenance, turnovers, and repairs. Slowly the companies growth has taken us into more remodeling and additions. The larger type of work is our main load right now. I still value and continue to service Rental properties. I will always remember who fueled my company and helped get me known out there! Thanks to all of our past, current and future clients. My goal when I started was to be that Contractor people could trust and would provide a good experience for the homeowner. I strive to be that every day.

Some clients are practicing 6' and Im not shaking hands or touching much of anything except for my tools. So clients who are practicing will be serviced. We do emergency calls and for my client base, I need to be available and accomodating. Thats essential! I simply must work, it is my livlihood. If I dont work I cannot sustain my business. Looking for SBA loan (forgivable) to help me keep my emplyees on who all practice proper guidlines for safety. Thats the only thing that may keep things going. Its about time we are lifted by the government. As of late, I have only experienced the constant beat down for taxes and liablities due to earnings. If they come through with forgivable funds I will be amazed. The Government is the huge reason small businesses fail, so its thier best time right now to step up to the plate and finally help us by giving back to us.

Perhaps aiming on getting in to an established business, preferably a smaller company as you did before. One that has a working, established network. That way you can experience how that works for the company and you would also learn how the network was built and ultimately start gaining the experience you would need in bringing that to assist you in your future paths. The Corporate giants will not appreciate you, or care much for your challenges, more so they will see them as a deficit and probably not hire you anyway.  So as Abel mentioned you may even get a job offer here. It so happens (Im not sure what area you are from/ in) I am looking for a person to assist the office and manage some networking projects and maintenance. I would train and the position would be diverse in where sales would definately be an offered componant with the training and could lead to a mangerial position depending on the individuals wants, drive, and capability. If you are in a commutable position maybe we should meet and discuss the opportunity?!    Either direction you go, just make sure and make responsible decisions and try and help people on your path and everything else will come together for you.  Best of luck to you   Steve 360-653-6530 Steves Home Services LLC

If the labor doesnt match or better the labor bid then you will have cash flow problems for obvious reasons towards the closing of that job. In the Industry we collect 50% down before starting any sizeable projects so that funds the project with the clients money. Do progress billing and that will minimize extending yourself on jobs and posibly getting shafted considerably by those who plan to not pay the other 50% at the end of the project. After 10 years thats the smartest way to maintain cash flow and control over costs of doing business and re couping said costs.

I can see this benefitting a business thats involved with media. As a General I wouldnt be interested as I am too busy to create and post video content. When and if I do it would be on a different site.  (more) I can see this benefitting a business thats involved with media. Sometimes I will part with a client and give them a couple refrigerator magnets with my business card attached. They always call back and Im very pleased when their neighbor also has us out. Since our services cover absolutely anything in the Home, every houshold can use our services. Providing the best service possible and being there in person seems to be the winning ingredient and value for referral and continuing business. I dont even advertise on vehicles and I dont send out mailers, yet I stay busy all year long!

So a fellow Contractor who may have all ready learned the ins and outs of a 1099 vs an employee and the requirements, reporting, and pros and cons cannot be a professional source of knowledge? Wow. Ok, so I am certainly not an expert on such but have struggled with the same decision. The thing with 1099 people are you cannot instruct them from or at the job they are brought in for. You would be taking on the role of an employer in that case. Frowned on I guess.  They also must have a certificate of insurance naming you as additionally insured. A license to do business along with the skills you require. So you just hired a Contractor!? Employees of course are reported and you are severely taxed. You also are directly responsible for your employee.  Maury correct me if I am speaking outside of my professional perimeters. : P Good Luck Steve!

Advertise and Market online to the appropriate potentials. Treat all clients the same and as you would want to be treated. Give them a memorable experience and that will come back tri fold.  (more) Advertise and Market online to the appropriate potentials. Treat all clients the same and as you would want to be treated. Once the reviews have landed at the office, only the 5 star reviews are then forwarded and posted to your website where your reputation is being established at 5 stars, the rest of the reviews are discarded. With this technique you control the rating and manage it completely. I do not personally push nor do I request that a client review me on line. It just feels odd to me and my whole reputation and review/ rating is solely from the public and un enticed. Completely voluntary and un coerced. Those are ratings I chose to live by. It just feels better. I do manage my ratings, but only to the extent of answering to the less than perfect to try and make good with the client if that seems at all possible. Lets face it, If you service the public then its only a matter of time before you lack somewhere or you do so at least in the eye of a client. Now you have a rating that is less then what you wish on your site. Its the luck of the odds and some folks you just cant please or make happy. The sooner I realized that it became easier. No one is perfect. The businesses you see that have been around for years with 5 stars are more than likely managing their own rating and to me thats not real.
