About Us

Clear’s Silat is a street-practical self-defense system developed over the past 40+ years by Sigung Richard Clear and based on his extensive studies, knowledge, and skills in the indigenous arts of Indonesia, China, Tibet, Russia and other cultures.

The arts in this system ( Silat, Pentjak Silat, Kun Tao Silat, Kung Fu, and Combat Tai Chi) are taught for their combative focus and their effectiveness against multiple attackers armed with weapons.

Despite this lofty focus, our average silat student can fight proficiently after 6 months to a year of training and continue to gain knowledge and better themselves and their skills.

Yes!   The method should be excellent and easy for real verbal and physical self defense but very hard to use in an offensive way.  Clear Defense is a great program for exactly that.   (more) Yes!   The method should be excellent and easy for real verbal and physical self defense but very hard to use in an offensive way.  Clear Defense is a great program for exactly that.

(more) I started Tai Chi when I was a teenager (in the late 1970s) 40 years ago because I have an inherited form of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and it was easy for anyone to see the twisting in my finger joints.  My mom told me that my hands and fingers would cramp up and hurt if they did not already hurt.  Due to the practice of Tai Chi I have never had any pain from the RA.  In my late teens because I went to a funeral for my last grandparent and I realized that both of my mom's parents died before the age of 50 due to bad health conditions.  My grandma had a heart attack partially as a symptom of Juvenile Diabetes which I have also inherited.  I then got more serious about Tai Chi.    Today, I am 54 yrs old and I am in great health (in fact I have better health and fitness than most 30 year olds).  My average blood pressure is 110 over 70.  My resting heart rate is in the high 60s.  My blood oxygen levels tend to be around 98%.       I began teaching Tai Chi in the 1980s and saw firsthand the benefits and help that I was able to give people who study from me.  I had a student with lower back pain who was able to make the pain completely go away.  I had other student's with various aches and pains and movement problems who were able to get great relief and better movement with less effort and little to no pain.  I have continued to refine and develop my practice and teaching of the art of Tai Chi  In the years since and have now helped folks with a wide range of ailments and problems including helping many folks who were on blood pressure medicine lower their blood pressure and heart rate so that they no longer need the medicine.   I have helped folks rehabilitate old and new injuries, breathe better and overcome asthma problems, increase their bone density and muscle mass and alleviate many types of aches and pains.  I am excited to be able to teach and help people utilizing this fun and healthy practice of Tai Chi.  It has helped me most of my life and I keep seeing it help me and others.  I have met wonderful people of all ages and enjoy the art.  There are a lot of 2 person skills / practice drills / interactive games in Tai Chi that also impart all of the Tai Chi benefits while you are having fun.  These interactive games also stimulate your mind and help combat the effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.   I just cannot say enough about how much I enjoy helping people and actively doing Tai Chi.  If you have not experienced it for yourself you should really visit me and take a free lesson.  You may call me in Maryville, TN at (865) 379-9997. Have a great and wonderful day! Richard
