Teen Behavior problems

Teen Behavior problems in your teen can be frustrating and overwhelming to deal with. When is it normal rebellious behavior or something much worse? How can you keep behavior problems from impacting the entire family? Are they going to be like this their entire life or is this just a phase?

These are just a few of the questions that go through a parent’s mind when they are dealing with behavior problems. Rest assured, there are some signs to look for. Does your teen…

  • Show lost interest in things that they used to enjoy
  • Have low energy
  • Sleep too much or too little, or seem sleepy throughout the day
  • Have periods of highly elevated energy and activity and require much less sleep than usual
  • Have trouble with existing friends
  • Spend more and more time alone and avoid social activities with friends or family
  • Have discipline problems in school
  • Fear gaining weight, or diet or exercise excessively
  • Cause disruptions in school or at home
  • Engage in risky or destructive behavior alone or with friends
  • Have problems with fighting
  • Engage in self-harm behaviors (e.g., cutting or burning their skin)
  • Smoke, drink, or use drugs
  • Have thoughts of suicide

Behavior problems may stem from a number of sources including disorders like anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression. Early treatment can not only eliminate the immediate behavior problems but it can also help your teen grow into a healthier, happier, and more secure adult.

Good gauges to keep in mind… It is time to seek help if your teen’s behavior persists for longer than a few weeks, causes themselves or their family distress, or interferes with functioning at school, home, or with friends. If your teen exhibits any behavior that is unsafe or talks about wanting to hurt him or herself or someone else, then seek help immediately.

Please keep in mind that you do not have to deal with behavior problems alone. We are here for you.
