I'd say read a bunch of books first. And the next first thing is to test your market before moving forward.

Thanks Pablo. Wanna know something interesting? The first PR book I read, I contacted the author (a best-seller) and asked her to be my mentor. She is now the key adviser at the firm. So with that experience, I definitely believe books are the way to go.
I agree. However, is the implementation of the techniques in those books what creates growth. There must be a process of systematically implementing what is worth from each book.
What is "worth" changes from person to person, though. Tools of Titans is a great example of actionable book.
This is true, but another concern is that books can be written by anyone these days, and often not the person whose name is slapped on it.
I've completed ghost written pieces for CEOs and Senior Executives who give zero input beyond the title. They contributed no research, no pointers. And then they slapped their names on it, marketed it, and sold it.
So though books are a great place to start, if people want advice on how to start a business, I would recommend going to business school, taking a few classes, and finding a mentor. I did all three, plus the books.
