Basil McNeely
M&A Stamp and Sign Co.
Manufacturers of all types of rubber stamps, including custom hand stamps, self inking, preinked, dater stamps, changeable numbering stamps, etc. Also, we are engravers of plastic and metals (stainless, brass, aluminum) for industrial marking. We make commercial and architectural signs, framed and unframed, including ADA signs with braille. With laser and rotary engraving, we make name tags, desk signs, directional and wayfinding signs. Full color name badges are made on our digital printer. Custom stencils for industrial marking are made in plastic and oilboard. We have been in business since 1926, and have been in the current building since the 1940's.
After working with the Mobile and Ohio, S. Blake McNeely partnered with Bert Harmer (an Englishman) and opened Gulf States engraving to do photoengraving and photography. Basil T. McNeely came to work after Bert Harmer was bought out, in about 1949, and eventually became president. Meanwhile, S. Blake McNeely worked with the Mobile Chamber of Commerce as Secretary and worked to get the Dauphin Island Bridge built, and develop the island. In 1973, Basil T. McNeely bought M&A Stamp and Sign Co, and moved it into the same building on St, Michael Street. He discovered that photoengraving was the fastest way to make high quality rubber stamps and both businesses did well. Gulf States Engraving and M&A Stamp and Sign Co. merged after his death in 1987. The business added computer controlled mechanical engraving to replace manual engraving to speed sign production soon afterward. The photoengraving equipment was replaced with laser to speed production of quality engraving.
