The best advice is to ask the friend/acquaintance who is a lawyer for a recommendation for legal counsel for that particular legal issue.  Pretty much every lawyer networks with dozens or hundreds of other lawyers, so the person will be able to find the appropriate counsel relatively easily.

I am surprised that no attorney has yet brought up CLE. If you can swing it, put together a presentation about a legal aspect that incorporates your idea.  You can have attorneys sitting for an hour, listening to your presentation.  And maybe even paying you.   (more) I am surprised that no attorney has yet brought up CLE. For better or worse, attorneys are trained and work in specialized areas, that do not necessarily have much to do with the industry.  A business that provides physical therapy for its clients may have various legal needs, such as business contracts, human resources / employee benefits, tax law advice, HIPAA compliance, etc.   Personally, I would just get a small business attorney, who will handle the simple problems, with the understanding that for some legal problems you'll have to be referred to another attorney.  This attorney can send out collection letters, or help you incorporate, or who will write a business contract for you, or do other simple matters.  But if you get a client who slips on your property, then you'll need a lawyer who does tort litigation, and not the business attorney.  If you have an issue with HIPAA, then you'll need an attorney who does those cases.  If you invent something and want to get a patent on, then you need a patent attorney. Etc.   Because the problems in business law, tax law or employment law, etc. are similar across all industries, you do not need to concentrate on attorneys who specialize in PT, or health care.  For example, if you need a business contract written, it is much better to hire a small business lawyer (whose clients include plumbing shops, restaurants, and pre-schools) who does not know much about your industry, rather than turn to HIPAA compliance lawyer who is well acquainted with your industry.

(1)  My biggest challenge is to hone in on businesses who need my services, and to convince the in-house attorneys or business people, that I am the right outside counsel for the job.  (2) I would like to know which marketing programs will work for my business.
