For years, I attended conferences and did what many teachers have done...pick up as much free stuff as I could. Makes sense since teachers don't have a lot of money and free is good, right?
Wrong.
When I got home from the conference, since I had no ownership of the free stuff, I put it on shelf where its value was matched by its position.
On the other hand, if I bought something (a book, an activity package), I had an ownership in that.
I think the same holds at schools. When administrators have to pay for something, there is perceived value.
I no longer do free programs unless it's part of a marketing activity (e.g., at a conference).
Hope this helps.

Over time, I have found that very targeted marketing beats the broad-brush approach. However, I, by no means, have it figured out!In the tutoring business, my best marketing approach has centered on placing ads in school newsletters. Other than "word of mouth," these have generated most and best clients. Please, other Alignables, I'm open to suggestions.Mike
