How We Got Started

After a successful 20+ year career as a General contractor in Los Angeles, I arrived in Naples hoping to start a new life. Like many others, I was caught in the economic turndown and on a friends recommendation, took a leap of faith and moved to Naples. My team has worked incredibly hard to build a great reputation and now after six years Shoreline Building Company is well known for quality workmanship and delivering a high level of customer service. There are a few highly respected companies and my aim is to continue to grow and work on building a great company. I love construction, design, and architecture and working with clients in Naples has been an absolute pleasure.

(more) Hi Henrietta, I am on my 3rd construction company and there is no secret formula. I have never spent a dollar on advertising. The number one way to get and keep customers, expanding your client base is word and mouth referrals. When you get a lead go to the job and be humble, be honest, be on time, be professional. Make sure you turn your bid around asap and when you present it, make sure it's typed and in an easy to read presentation. I like to present all bids in person so I can go over any concerns the client may have. When you are working on your first job or any job, go to every house in the neighborhood and tell the homeowners you are doing work down the street and are available if they have any projects. Make sure you do not cut corners, hire the best employees you can and if you make a mistake correct it right away. Every job you do, put your sign outside. Make sure every job is IMMACULATE from start to finish. Make sure every customer is 100% satisfied when you finish. Always ask for feed back. Get your customers to review you on Yelp, Google, Houzz, Facebook etc. Make a facebook page and tell everyone you know to tell everyone they know you are in business. Post ONLY COMPLETED jobs on your page. Every client you have is a marketing machine if you do it right. Make sure to ask them during the job and after the job if they know anyone looking to do work on their home. Branding - choose a good memorable name for your company and make sure it is not being used by anyone else. Try not to pigeon hole yourself into a niche unless that is your plan for the future. In other words, don't say you are a handyman if you plan on being a general contractor. Make you logo clean and easy to read. You can find a great logo designer for 20-50 bucks on fiverr.com. Make sure all your employees and customers have a stack of business cards. Marketing- who can refer your business? Ask yourself this question. For me it's realtors, material, fixture and appliance suppliers, kitchen and bath shops I strongly believe in setting goals and BELIEVING in attaining them wholeheartedly. Although I have a tremendous amount of success in construction in years gone by, I lost everything due to the economic downturn and some stupid investments. I really went from being able to retire to living in a van. Today and after 4 years of starting a new company in SWFL, I own a multi million dollar company with profits way above the national average. We are booked 12 months out currently and have the potential to be NETTING millions within a couple of years. I say all this not to impress you, but to impress upon you that literally the skies are the limits in this business. You can choose to think small or even be small. You can make a nice living and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but you can also shoot for the stars and it's there for the taking. On a final note after reading your post, I want to tell you a mindset that will keep you unsuccessful for ever. NEVER EVER FOCUS ON TRYING TO BE THE LOWEST BIDDER. Find higher end clients that can afford to pay for a quality job. I am not saying it's impossible to make money in the lower end of the business, but trust me, it's no fun working for people on a tight budget and always looking to save money. Go to the area of your town where the successful people live and start to work there. Can't get a job - do something for FREE! That's right, knock on doors until someone will let you do a project for free to show your worth. Doing something for free in order to get a client is not the same as giving a discount. I have never given a discount on any job in 30 years. Be confident of your worth. It doesn't matter how little a customer pays for a job if it's a lousy job. I really hope this helps you. I responded because I tried to seek out advice many times in my business and nobody wanted to help. If you really want to build a great business, it takes work. You cannot sit at home and spend money on advertising - it simply doesn't work - Google Gary Vaynerchuk to learn everything you need to know about marketing in this day and age. Get your business cards, go out and meet people. Be passionate about what you offer. Don't tell people you offer discounts! Over outstanding service and work for people that can afford to pay for that. Good luck.
