I don t get into wars. I offer a well thought out price per hr. for my 30 yrs of private practice. Sometimes a consumer is out of work or financially struggling. I take this into consideration....therapists, good therapists should offer a price not too high, but not too low. I don' accept...

I don t get into wars. I offer a well thought out price per hr. for my 30 yrs of private practice. Sometimes a consumer is out of work or financially struggling. I take this into consideration....therapists, good therapists should offer a price not too high, but not too low. I don' accept any middlemen...I don't take insurance. I let the warriors go elsewhere. Sometimes you even get more than you pay for, or less! It depends on how you place value.

You need to find your niche in addition to a website, profiles and clients' (yours) recommendations. E.g., I have a forensic niche. I put it on my website. I write letters to the 35 lawyers that yearly use me as an arm for their prepleading memoranda (I evaluate their clients) reminding them...

I write letters to the 35 lawyers that yearly use me as an arm for their prepleading memoranda (I evaluate their clients) reminding them I'm still around for work. I also have a Second Opinion in Mental Health (I add this to my website). I also write many businesses, telling them how I can help their clients! Do a blog on your favorite family care business topic!

I need as little information as possible. Consumers referring other consumers get anxious as do family members and tend to give me too much data. I prefer receiving the person's first name only and the referrer giving the new prospect my phone number and website. I like to formulate my own impressions without being bombarded with other folks' impressions. I often get referrals from other professionals. Many know my niche is second opinions in mental health. I also do forensic evals. giving the consumer a non-biased clinical report, written without psychobabble. http://www.LanaAckaway.com
In New York, the Bar Association of the City of New York is a direct referral source for anyone in need of a lawyer. Your local City or State Bar Association is a good place to start.

Word of mouth has added significantly to my referrals. I had two lawyers 9 years ago recommending my forensic consulting services. One lawyer told two others and then seven were telling more. I now have 32 attorneys who utilize my services -- not only DWI and DUI, but felony, assault, divorce pleadings, domestic violence issues, attempted murder, etc. My psych evals go a long way in helping attorneys develop their prepleading memoranda. My goal is with them: help keep the client out of incarceration. If possible, help them with underlying issue: mental health issue.
I also get referrals to my second opinions in mental health via the story on my website, which is true. In addition, former patients of mine recommend new patients for me to see.

I too am concerned about your defining your client base via 'economics.' Besides it seemingly prejudicial, there are high functioning alcoholic and drug abusers in poor and wealthy communities. When I started m private practice, 27+ years ago I did Interventions for $6,000. each. There were many workbooks I developed; people I needed to hire; talks and time for rehearsals of meetings; driving time (if out of state and hiring a driver when necessary). Today I do selective Interventions and selective detox (non-medical). I also have a PA onboard (as a consult) when I do the detox myself. You need relationships with people -- at rehabs, get to know their marketing staff. Give a presentation. Invite for breakfast, etc. Phillip Seymour Hoffman passed from untreated addiction and depression. Substance abuse effects all gender, race, economics, etc. Your prejudice/bias needs to be explored by you and a possible professional that can understand it with you. Clients/patients are developed through relationships. That has been and still is the 'best method' I have used and still do. Every three months, I update my marketing campaign, to include my website. The phone doesn't ring by itself!
