Hi
Working retail for someone else for 6 years and making the decision to become my own boss was nerve wracking. Well that was 20 years ago!!! It takes courage and "wear the jacket" till it fits. Act as if and you will surely see. You develop ways to have conversations with folks that establishes "easy" in's and make friends fast.
Remembering the back story of each person - I used to write myself little cards with important information after meetings with folks. Not just info about the project but info about vacations birthdays and children and interests so the next time you meet you have a place to begin with someone. Most folks are impressed that you remembered their important events in their life. Makes sales much more human, and sales is a human story. Not every client wants a brash in your face "sales guy". Some want a person who is actually listening to their needs rather than just selling "what everyone else is getting". Its a very important part of sales, identifying the clients "need" rather than muscling someone into what you think they should have.
This process is slower but clients tend to always come back for their next project. This method builds client base through "friends and family". Remember you only need 1 client per day - the right one! Happy hunting!
