When I am working with a client my first suggestion is Accounts Receivable and I often find that that means INVOICE YOUR CUSTOMER. You can not collect money if you haven't invoiced. Check on the slower payers. Send reminders and follow up to make sure they received your invoice.
Second suggestion is your Accounts Payable. If you have net 30 with a vendor pay net 30. Take control of your Accounts Payable and use the time allowed. You don't have to pay the bill the day you receive it. Paying a bill with a credit card will give you extra time but the credit card needs to be paid each month. Using your credit card especially with auto pays keeps you bills current and gives you automatic receipts for easy accounting. You can always make another payment to your credit card when you have received payment from your customer. This extra effort can ease a short term slow cash flow.
Third suggestion is a line of credit with your bank. Most banks work the line of credit with your Accounts Receivable. Your line of credit amount is a percentage of the money due in your Accounts Receivable. Another reason to keep your Accounts Receivable current is that invoices that are over 60 days old do not qualify for the line of credit.
That is why my first suggestion is always review your Accounts Receivable: Invoice and Collect.

I am having a larger number of SMB owner coming to me to get their accounting and bookkeeping catch up. They know they are busy and have more sales but don't know how they are doing financially or are experiencing cash flow issues. They are growing faster and don't know which service is making them money, which one is short term or which one will build their business.
I have spent a large amount of time get owner catch up and taking a good look at the income and expenses. Just raising the price on a item or cutting down an expense can change your bottom line. Also a budget will help you plan for the future.

My answer will be QuickBooks Online. It gives up to date information. You can do your invoicing and receive payment on the job with your phone or iPad and don't have to go back to your office to do your invoicing and collect your payment. Your accounting is current with little effort giving you important information to run your business. Spreadsheets are after the fact bookkeeping giving you a greater chance for error and missing information. Small businesses and especially new businesses need to know the important information that good accounting gives you. Half of the startups that fail are due to poor accounting. Even though QuickBooks Online is user-friendly, I do agree that the proper setup and training from a Certified QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor is most important. I would also advise you, that if your tax accountant will not work with QuickBooks Online, get a new tax accountant. QuickBooks Online makes getting accounting support easy. I do training or support with my clients online, saving time and money. QuickBooks Online is like your tool box and your apps are your tools. Having your QBO available anytime, anywhere is a great advantage over desktop. QBO has auto bank feeds for your bank and credit cards and that alone is a time and money saver.

QuickBooks is the best and QB online is improving to be better than desktop. I am a certified QB ProAdvisor in both Desktop and Online and I am an accountant. I work with mainly QBO clients. QBO is available at anytime and anywhere. No need for an accountant copy that causes the client issues. My client and I can be logged into their QBO account and we both see what is happening. It's great for training or just bookkeeping. And the Apps for QBO sync your information and eliminate the posting of transactions and leave more time to work your business.I offer with my service plans a free QBO Plus account and some other apps so that less time is spent on bookkeeping and you have more time growing your business. Also included in my plans are financial reports but most important are the Management Reports that hold the most information and showcase the health of your business.

Honestly, Trust and Education are good starters, but there is a difference between a Bookkeeper and Accountant. There is a big difference between bookkeeping and accounting. Bookkeeping is cash basis reporting and doesn't show you the true economic picture of your business. Accounting uses accruals to record the income earned and matches the expenses in the period incurred. A good accountant helps provide oversight and account management to ensure the right policies and procedures are implemented and timely accurate financials are produced. Management Reports for good financial intelligence to increase cash flow and what KPIs to monitor to help you run your business better, make more money and grow faster.
