I whole-heartedly agree with everything Gregory M Driscoll says but I also agree with the points that Dennis London has made. Big box stores evolved into the place that a prospective customer goes to touch an item they're interested in.... and to learn more about it from any qualified resources that work in the store. Armed with that information the customer then goes home and orders the item on-line where it's cheaper because the on-line organizations don't carry the high that the big box stores do (rent, security, etc).. Its a moral dilemma in that the customer actions show no loyalty or appreciation for the organization that has basically made the sale in that they have helped the customer make the decision to buy. Instead they simply turn to the organization that gives them the lower price. In reality this absence of earned loyalty is demonstrated every day by the success of organizations like Walmart who have simply bullied suppliers into giving them the best deals so that they can sell products at the lowest price. The smaller stores that have... in the majority been around for longer and have contributed to the community, are forced to close their doors. Hate to say it but the free market system is a cruel entity sometimes.

I appreciate any interest in my business. The services I provide address what is arguably the most important success factor in any business system implementation.... system requirements definition. My 15 years in management of maintenance, inventory, procurement and accounts payable served me well in adapting to a move into the business software realm. I’ve guided and been involved in 100s of system implementations and have developed what are time proven techniques for ensuring that customer detailed requirements are uncovered then thoroughly understood by the technical resources that support the projects. In many ways I serve as a mediator ... even the translator... between the business people and the technical resources on the project. While it would be wrong to say that I’ve seen every imaginable business system requirement, I can say that my 15 years in the chemical industry and 28 years in the software business have left me with a depth of relevant experience pertinent to system requirements definition.

First and foremost I recognized the need for the skills and experience that I have to offer. Very few people can take into account both the technical aspects and the real-world business considerations when implementing business application software. I did a lot of networking before heading out on my own since I realized that I was about to become the provider and the marketer of my services.

If it's a business networking meeting then both parties need to come away with an understanding of what the other has to offer. What services and products do they provide and what "proven value" are their customers getting from those services and products. Of course the session should be an equal mix of listening and talking so that both parties feel they benefitted from spending the time. If both parties demonstrate social and effective communication skills throughout the session then overall I believe the session has been a success.
