What Choice Do You Make When Your Pet Needs Expensive Medical Care?
Answered by:
This is a very difficult topic in that there is no black and white answer.
When buying a pet try to be sure to have enough money put aside for emergencies. Also pet insurance is a good solution. On the other hand I feel that veterinarians are far too expensive possibly overcharging and the pet industries is worth billions.
Because we want to keep them healthy and alive as much as possible we pay whatever is needed however if the animal is in pain then putting them down is the selfless action to take

It's often easy to say that veterinarians are too expensive if you haven't been on the other side of things. In animal medicine you see the price and have to submit a claim to insurance for reimbursement and in human medicine you only see your portion to pay because insurance handles the rest before it even gets to you. Equipment used, medicines issued, and value of care are all factored into the price. Many clients expect prices to be what they used to be ten years ago, heck we even wish that we can offer care at those prices but with our economy that just can't happen.
Some veterinary hospitals offer payment plans if a relationship is already established or may have an angel fund for families who can't afford care. Loyalty here works in your favor, creating a partnership with your veterinarian on behalf of your pets care. We have been burned many a times trying to help and having owners skip out on the rest of the bill because our first priority is always to do right by the pet. However due to circumstances beyond our control or the control of the clients the best care may be something that is out of reach. At that point the options change but the intention behind the choice stays the same.
If you (as a whole not you personally), have a veterinarian and it doesn't feel like you are partners in your pet's health care then don't be afraid to find one that is.
