I guess there are some things we need to consider. I work in a right to work state which means some employers take advantage of their workers by making them become independent contractors. They do not give them a choice if they want to work for them.
There is also some confusion between sub-contractors and independent contractors. Sub-contractors are businesses that you partner with. They provide you with a W9 and a certificate of insurance. Independent contractors are those individuals not working for another company and work on a per job basis.
I personally do not use independent contractors because I have to extend my insurance coverage to them as a default for my client. That increases my liability exposure. I use subcontractors to augment my crews when we get very busy. This works for us because we can keep our work force small decreasing our turnover and overhead.
I feel that everyone that wants to work in either capacity needs to file for a license with the municipality that will base their business from. It is a minimal cost. They can also file to become an LLC to protect their personal assets. They just need to file their taxes in the proper manner. If not, they can get penalized for not doing so in a timely manner.
I also think that they should get an agreement/contract written between them and the person/company they are working for detailing the working relationship, such as rate of pay and other items they feel need to be agreed upon.
That is my two cents.

As a small business that provides labor services to our clients, it is very hard especially during this pandemic to maintain cash flow when large entities, companies and government agencies, are allowed to hold payment up to 90 days. There should be a strict law, not negotiable. This way we all get a fair shake, not just those that have more liquid resources than small companies. I understand running checks monthly was more costly in the past, but now with all of the electronic methods of payment, the need for actual paper checks is not necessary. That would be a huge cost savings if implemented. This would be a great help to small businesses.

I can honestly say that the near future is going to be a busy time because of the move from large open offices to work from home. There is allot of work booked but it has been the norm that they just don't want to pull the trigger until the last minute. This is because no one is sure of how this is all going to play out. I am more concerned about a year from now and everyone has abandoned their large offices. We are a service provider to large companies with allot of internal moves within large buildings. That work is going to slow significantly.
Luckily, we partner with many large moving companies in the area. This allows us to work as subcontractors for them when they get overwhelmed.
I will always continue to keep an open mind to new avenues of revenue and will continue to increase the relationships with other local vendors that may need our help.
All we can do is wait to see how it plays out.
Be safe and keep a positive attitude.
We are fortunate to have a very tight network and have been able to help each other with sparse work here and there. It is better than nothing and helps keep the lights on.
I am looking forward to getting through this. I know there is still a struggle ahead.

We are small business owners and do not shy away from hard work. That is what we do. We will find a way.

In my business, you are only as good as your last job. I partner with many of the other business in the area that can either use my help or that can help me. I use word of mouth as my marketing tool. I have a very good reputation for doing what I say I am going to do. Get creative in ways to engage other vendors to see how you can help them. It also helps if you can throw work their way as well.
We are a solutions based company. By that I mean that we are not experts in everything but over the years I have tried to learn as much as possible about my industry. That way I can help clients find what they need, even if it is not something I do for them directly. For example, I do not do flooring, but I have listened and learned about flooring products and companies that I would use in my office. When the question comes up, I am confident about speaking on the subject. This usually helps to put my client at ease because they do not have to do the research and they know they can trust my recommendation.
Hope this help.
I am sorry, but that is not something we have ever done.
Thanks

I have a mentor that is a person that had his own business for many years and a person I worked with at the same company for a while before he went into business. His business is in the same industry as mine.
I talk to one of my vendors that seems to have a pretty similar style business to my, a small family run business. He has similar struggles as well because we work in the same industry.
I also have an older friend that has allot of business experience from a much higher level of business perspective. He helps with looking at the big picture and asking some really good questions. Like: Where do I want to be in 5 years and what is the likely hood that I can see myself there? He also helps me understand and keep an eye on global issues and how they can affect me.
Most importantly, I look to myself for answers. I try and use all the information provided and make the decision that makes most sense to me.
Hope this helps.
