About Us
We are the repository and we celebrate the rich jazz legacy of Pittsburgh. If New Orleans is recognized as the "Birthplace of Jazz," then Pitsburgh is its Fort Knoz.

America's Classical Music (known as Jazz) was designated as a National Treasure by the 100th US Congress (HR57). Yet it has been fading in appreciation in American popular culture increasingly since the introduction of the drum machine and subsequent removal of instrumental music programs from the schools. By and large American students know more about Beethoven and Mozart than they do about Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. There has been scant interest in the oral history of this National Treasure by academics even today as we see more obituaries than interviews of the iconic progenitors of the art form. When I realized that the new technology enabled me to reach millions internationally with artifacts and information from the neglected folklore and creative expressions of jazz, I created this network where it all could be accumulated and shared. Also realizing that the roughly 150 year history of jazz would be less rich without the major contributions of Pittsburghers throughout, I named it the Pittsburgh Jazz Network not intending to be exclusive but to demonstrate the ubiquity of the Pittsburgh influence from the very beginning to the present time.
