I feel the most neglected aspect of online business is maintenance.
Maintenance is not just making sure your website is functioning well and doesn't contain broken links, it means building your web presence.
You have to make sure your website meets specific standards, but you also want it to be fast for mobile users. Having a fast, professionally designed website that contains thoughtful functionality that will help visitors using mobile devices is key, but you should schedule regular audits to make sure you are staying up to date. For example, Google is rolling out a core algorithm update right now as we speak. Staying current is very important.
Think of your website as a garden. You need to take care of your garden and maintain it from the ground up. As time passes you need to make adjustments to make sure the garden is producing what you want.
Once your garden is working well and on a solid foundation, it is time to let people know about your garden. That is where SEO and especially local SEO come into the picture. Things like Google My Business are essential to finding local customers and GMB can be a lead generating machine if optimized well.
If you are budgeting to bring your business online, don't put all of your funds into the design and build. Maintaining your site and SEO is a long term investment. One that is a marathon, not a sprint. Building your web presence takes time and a lot of work.
Continue to update your site and consistently add content. Add to your blog and cut and paste that content into Google My Business. Do this consistently every month for at least 6 months and you will gain a lot of attention. Especially from Google.
The truth is, just because you built it, doesn't mean they'll come. You have to spread the word and drive traffic back to you.
Another item worth mentioning is now is a great time to move your business online, or add eCommerce to your site. It is important to do your research and shop around. DIY systems like Squarespace and WIX advertise ease of use, but they also come with limitations for search engine optimization. WIX was even once penalized by Google and had their websites deindexed. Make sure you own your site and it has a modern content management system.
Some systems are also offering special incentives due to the Pandemic. Our own system is offering free eCommerce upgrades with no transaction fees for the rest of the year. It is designed to help businesses that have had to temporarily close, but still have products to move.
I would not recommend compensating clients for reviews. That can backfire as it is definitely frowned upon. However, I don't think there is anything wrong with a well-crafted email explaining you have a new site about to launch and you would love to incorporate some reviews from happy customers....

However, I don't think there is anything wrong with a well-crafted email explaining you have a new site about to launch and you would love to incorporate some reviews from happy customers. Ask some of your clients is they would be willing to "be a champion" for your business. By being a champion you can open up the discussion to referrals(which can lead to compensation) but certainly writing a review or just a simple quote can be an easy task for them. Especially if it is for your website, short and sweet is best. And if possible (SEO tip) have them include the keyword your business associates with the most in their review. For example "Best janitorial services in Springfield!" or "If you're looking for quality janitorial services for your business, I highly recommend Quality Clean Janitorial Services in Springfield, MO. They are the best around!"

SEO and PPC are always good, but for a home-based business, spending money on ads can be a tough pill to swallow. A sure-fire way to gain attention is to start joining some local social media groups(Facebook and LinkedIn for example). Look for things like "Support Local business group" or any groups with the name of your area in it. Most people will be on their computer when they realize they have an IT issue. Turning to a local social media group is an easy way to get someone's help fast. When you join the group, introduce yourself with a post about your services.
Another way is to get published. Whether it is in your local newspaper, a blog or even through a podcast, getting your message out there with some relevant stories of how you helped other businesses will go a long way.
Lastly and along the same lines, there is a site called HARO ( https://www.helpareporter.com ) where they connect experts like yourself with journalists. You could be the expert reference for an article on Mashable. That is something that could create a lot of validation and traction for a local business. At the end of the SEO and PPC are all about leading traffic to your site and ideally to some kind of funnel where you capture the lead and eventually convert it to a customer. Get as creative as you can in driving traffic to your site.
Oooohhh that is another one! Moz has a great video about Local SEO and what will make the biggest impact. Google My Business is a HUGE factor. Up 32% from last year in the overall value it brings to local businesses. You can check out the video here.
Optimize your site for conversion and performance. You have about 3 seconds when someone visits your website before they make a decision to bail or commit. Make sure your site is fast and your purpose hits them right in the face!!

Hi George!
For home improvement services I would assume you are targeting locally. So I would make sure you have your Google My Business account set up and get happy customers to give you great reviews as soon as possible. That will give you a boost on local rankings in Google Maps.
After that, the best option is Local SEO which typically includes some updates to your website (metadata, H1 tags, etc. minor stuff) and building directory listings. Making sure your contact information(Name, Address, and Phone(NAP)) is correct and listed everywhere your potential customers could be looking is key.
There are lists out there that you can get that are great for your niche(home improvement, construction, etc.) If you would like me to send you one just let me know. You can also hire a service to add your listing to a ton of sites automatically. Adding your NAP information can be time-consuming so there are services out there that will do it for you.
We have one, but there are plenty out there. This page explains it a bit more, but building your listings(citations) and focusing on Local SEO will give you the best return. In our experience with home improvement businesses.

By being responsive and thoughtful. A lot of our clients need custom solutions for their website(s) which can be an intimidating project for them and they have a lot of questions. We work really hard as being always available no matter what the question. Ultimately all projects are a collaboration between us and the client, so it is very important to keep them completely informed along the way and throughout the project. Scheduling weekly standing meetings, thinking about their pain points and providing ideas or solutions is very important. Try to give as close to “white glove service” as you can.

If a client fits a vertical for us, or a niche we would like to pursue, we do offer a "Champion" discount. Which means we expect them to champion our business and services. However, we make it very clear that it is all contingent on us exceeding their expectations and delivering results. We have also tried a commision for referrals but wasn't as effective. I have a very confident colleague that at times has given $200 for every lunch you booked with someone that would benefit from his services. A bit too bold for me, but it worked well for him. The strategy is nice.

One way to promote a plumbing business in your local area is through your citations. Your citations are the information found on all the websites (Yelp, Angies list etc...) that hold your information (name, address, phone number etc...) You need to make sure they are correct but also present. The more citations are accurate and consistent, the better your SEO for your website and more possibilities that when someone is looking for a plumber you show up.
