A CPA can be an all-around professional business adviser and an asset for any business. An accountant - anyone who knows the basics of a double entry DR/CR system. In all cases, the levels of professionalism and expertise can vary widely.

CAUTION: don't fall into a marketing trap thinking that buying an accounting software, as a non-accounting business owner, will by default make your business have proper accounting. If you bought a set of power tools from Home Depot today, would you be able to build a real home with the knowledge and time availability you currently have while running your core business? Probably not... Accounting tools like QuickBooks, Xero, and the others, are just power tools, you still need accounting expertise to have proper accounting. QBO is our choice for the clients as it is easy to setup, use and affordable for most startups and new small businesses. If a business can't afford to hire an accountant, my CPA advice to such business owners is to focus on their sales and top-line revenue first. If they have no revenue, accounting is the least of their worries, as they're at risk of going out of business!

Also, agree with many commenters here, the bad clients will weed themselves out naturally if you have the proper onboarding process.

I think someone has already mentioned Oracle's NetSuite, but I'd also look into Microsoft Dynamics. Once you outgrow QuickBooks, this is the time to consider having a captive accoutning/finance department. GL!
