Your time is the most valuable commodity. Don't let anyone rob you of it. Nothing worse then spending two days on an estimate, educating the client giving them FREE information so they can do it themselves or higher someone who is cheap that will be out of business in two years.

There is no need for the opposite...agression, but rather learn to be more assertive in a positive non combative manner. Finally, if you allow the client to beat you down, then you probably don't have a good understanding of overhead costs, and you are not accounting for the future expenses.

But its also necessary to have job site signs, truck advertising, and other local advertising so people see and begin to recognize the name. Place a business card in every person's hand that you meet. Sell yourself when meeting and talking with people. And most importantly, do each project well. Make the entire experience from the returned phone call, to the last hand shake and everything in between a wonderful experience for your clients. There is nothing, I mean NOTHING better than word of mouth advertising. Do a great job; they will sing your praises, and they will call you back for repeat business, do a poor job, and they will tell everyone what a horrible contractor you are and you wont be working this time next year.

I figured out at the age of 9 that I could bye a large bag of Cheetos, split them into smaller bags and sell them on my block.... making money back with a 50 cent profit. I did yard work for people, cleaned out garages....and all sorts of kid jobs. The cool thing was,  it was my own jobs. At the age of 21 I started a construction company and 31 years later I am still going strong. Survived numerous recessions and downturns in the building industry. Why? Drive, Passion, Perseverance are key. I tell my children, "find your passion in life and you never work a day in your life."  Regarding failure, I never went into anything with the thought of failure. Half the battle is in the mind. If you are going into something thinking " I don't know", you are already 50% out the door. If you think about it, there is risk in literally everything we do. Failure is only when you have never tried.

The real problem is two -fold. First it stems with a persons own self worth (esteem) and how they view compare themselves with others.  A person is not defined by their business.  Their value/ worth doesn't come from the success or failure, from money or lack of, how many employees, volume of business, what you accomplished...or didn't...its not even praise from another person. Second, pride has a way of taking over. Everything about pride is wrong. It lies, it cheats, its steals. Humility will take you much farther in business, and in life When it comes down to it, The only thing that really matters is what you think of yourself and that you feel good about who God created you to be!

As a business owner, it is essential to understand the "nut" that is your overhead costs. Once you truly understand the real cost of doing business then It doesn't matter what Billy Bob construction services can do the job for. No two businesses are alike; you may have a building, they may work out of their car. You may have employees they may be a one man band. The thinking may be "if I lower my rates to get my foot in the door, then later on I can make up the costs". This will undoubtedly work against you- just like telling a client you are willing to meet with them in the evening or on weekends. If you are good at what you do, offer an excellent product, great service with a smile, then there is a value and there are tons of people who are willing to pay for it. Tell your client you understand their desire to have a lower price. Make suggestions on different products, techniques, suggest homeowner participation (sweat equity), do less work. But never lower your rates. Otherwise we will not be having this conversation in 5 years.
