As a bookkeeping professional, I not only do the "data entry" and reconciling, I also decide how to classify transactions, perform journal entries, prepare financial statements (balance sheet, profit and loss, and statement of cash flow) and review them with my clients. In the future, I also plan to offer tax preparation. What I can not do is perform an audit. Bookkeepers and accountants choose which services they offer based on what they are allowed to do per regulations and their education. Bookkeepers tend to establish closer relationships with their clients than accountants/ CPAs since they deal with the day to day functions of their client's business.
