I love backroads and two-lane travel because it's more fun to see the heartland vs a tourist trap.  I've tried a few travel agents in the past, and the general response was 'WHY would you want to go there instead of someplace trendy and touristy" That is a turn off. Be excited about where ever it is, even it's only to see the worlds largest prairie dog.

We are not members of the local chambers- many of the rural communities near us  do not have one- But we are members of the State Chamber. It is good for us,  we give voice to rural and have access to resources we may have otherwise not known about. I believe in personal networking. I understand the value of connections, and make use of online networking. But in person you can hear the tone of their voice, and see their reactions. We send personal notes via regular mail and occasionally freebies. Both have always been appreciated and the notes, because it's so novel these days to get anything personal in the mail- are always well received. While I do own a couple nice 'business' style outfits, my main livelihood is Farming (small grains and cattle). My attire definitely reflects it! There have been a couple occasions that I needed to be appropriately dressed, BUT chose to come in decent jeans and a nice top. We live a 100+ round trip to 'town' where meetings are. Being a farmer means I generally only get to town on those occasions, which means it will most definitely involve a trip to any number of feed/seed/parts houses. No way will I jump into the dirty parts truck in my brand new stockings and heels, nor will I try a quick change in -40 snowing and blowing. Sometimes it works against me, but thankfully most the people I deal with at these networking or business events already know that we farm, or we're calving/hauling/cutting and are generally forgiving. And I thank them for it too. Boy-o! But when I do dress... I do it all the way.

I would cruise Route 66 in it's entirety. (I have been on parts) I love road trips, history, vintage advertising. And I love the lessons I learn from road trips.
