When the shutdowns went in to effect our biggest challenge was figuring out which supplier had which product. We spent the first few weeks chasing flowers; wholesalers were open limited hours and had uncertain shipments. The supply chain is more stable now though there are some things that still...

When the shutdowns went in to effect our biggest challenge was figuring out which supplier had which product. We spent the first few weeks chasing flowers; wholesalers were open limited hours and had uncertain shipments. The supply chain is more stable now though there are some things that still have limited availability. The product that was available was excellent quality overall, now it's good; some things still excellent, others looking a little picked over. We were given an opportunity to adjust our standing orders which will help our dumpage moving forward. Overall sales have been good and our Easter was the busiest we've had in years.
Biggest annoyance? We were reported 4 times to the "Covid Police", even though a careful reading of shutdown guidelines indicated that florists were essential. I can forgive the one uneducated citizen....I will never forgive the competitor, her husband and her daughter for the other three complaints. Yeah....that.

Of course, we do! The main two criteria as consumers should be first, is it safe. And, second, does it taste good. Beyond that we need to know that our local water departments' testing is accurate. Blessed where I am that the tests are accurate and the water tastes great! Since we're in a flower...

Blessed where I am that the tests are accurate and the water tastes great! Since we're in a flower shop we had our water tested to insure that we were using the best floral preservative for our product, and that test matched up with the city water department's test.
Funny story: I know our water tastes great. A few years ago a salesman from Crystal Springs (bottled water company) came in to sell his product and claimed how good it tasted. I challenged him to a blind tasting with his water, our tap water and a bottle of Fiji water. For some strange reason he opted to pass. (Smart fella!)

For me it's one of our (actually all) local nurseries. They carried locally grown unique stock that is rare to find anywhere else. They also had knowledgeable staff that could answer all my questions.
What I'm seeing though is the lack of personal, qualified service; lack of variety, lower quality products and big box stores.
The more important question is...what do we do about it?
It really depends on what your business is. We're a flower and gift store...high-touch as I call it. Our best advertising has always been word of mouth, but that doesn't mean I don't do some of just about everything else.

We will! Staff is given the option to dress up and we will participate in our community Halloween celebration in the business district. We'll have a scarecrow competition, trick-or-treating (we always offer something to parents!), games, dog costume competition etc.

Asking if we're starting earlier isn't really relevant to us. We have a huge giftware sale at the same time every year (this year Nov. 9 thru 24) and we have to have the entire store redecorated. Since we have a small staff we have to start early, usually the first week in October.

I wouldn't have a problem putting on a class. Probably the most impressive thing a "student" would learn is how hard it is to make an arrangement look like a professional had done it. We haven't done classes just because we don't like doing it.

In our creative industry the best way for us to wow a client is to convince them to let us do what we do best. So many people want to know exactly what they're getting that we have to use "recipes" which limit us. If we can assure them that they'll love what we'll do then we can use our...
