I could feel the heat from the steel bannister as made my way down the doorway's entrance leading from rooftop. At 10 years old this had been the place where I had chosen as my getaway retreat from all the happenings and drama within the city. It was the place i could go to mellow out and release the built up anger that had stemmed from living within a broken family while all along smoking some of the best weed you could ever find on the South side of Jackson. I had witnessed everything from afar signifying on the daily routines of the local neighborhood hustlers. Though I had known many of them I had also formed a personal relationship with those who were perfect starngers just by watching their moves. Donte, whom everyone had knew as studderbox had a steady flow of cash coming in and out our neighborhood. I had'nt seem him much lately but i could tell that he was still nearby from the corner fillers who had taken his spot when he dissappeared. Like Donte, they all stood out from the red bandanas they had worn tucked into their wadrobe in various places sybolizing that they had belong to a gang called the bloods The city of Jackson had since then deemed the guys as a threat to society. Though the police did'nt come around here much, to be seen outside of the area wearing the colors most of the time resulted in an immediate harrasment . I had heard storys from the neighborhood daily saying "so and so got shot by the police", or, " the PEOPLE, meaning the police, Locked his ass up last night!".. To me they were just regular cats trying to make a living, but, to the State of Mississippi, they were veiwed as Alqueda or something. On a few occasions I had witness the Red Flag carriers fill the lobby of My building conducting what had seemed to me to be a meeting. No one had been allowed to leave or enter the building at these particular times in which residents whom had to be somewhere during these particular time took the alternative route, the fire escape. Everything had been organized and though the fire escape may have been an inconvience no one ever complained about it,. These guys hurt and helped the community in fashion where they had been somewhat hated, but yet, Highly appreciated. I lived on the 16th floor of the 20 story building nicknamed "Los Carmelitos". It had been called this for so long that if offered a million dollars I would'nt even be able to give you the Original name of Our housing projects. Each time I had been approched by police officers for loitering or suspicious activity and taken down to the station they would always ask, "Where you from?", and every single time my response would be the same, "THE Carmelitos". later on I had discovered that early on this response had gotten me asshole deep in being classified as one of Donte's followers. The building had been around since the late 1960s. Within the block radius there had been 6 similiar structures all connected to the same housing projestc however 2 of the building had been closed by the city due to Infastructure, electrical, and even infestation problems. There had been so many people in this area that during the warm seasons it would really be hard to tell exactly what buildings had been occupied because of the traffic. The spanish had migrated during the early 90s taking over the vacant buildings and it really was'nt a surprised that they were never harrased. They kept the grounds spotless, brought money to the neighborhood and had no problems fitting in with the good ole american traditions. Gonazeles, whom everyone had knew as "Spooky" had come from an El salvador bringing with him a cheap way to dodge an electric bill. He had tapped into power lines, used car batterys, and even made lights come on from rigging up stolen solar panels from interstates signs, he was a beast. His services had got to be so popular around the Carmelitos that he soon sent for 3 more of his helpers from his home land, Chango ,Bandit, and Lethro, all Elsavadorians. The Day had been a regular to start for me up until the rooftop incident. I had awakened a 5am, got dressed in my converse and dingy khaki suit then gobbled down a bowl of Kix cereal while watching the local news on my mother's laptop. She hadbeen passd out as usual on the couch where she always had slept and beside was the astray plumb full of roaches, pencil thick half smoked marijuana ciggarretes. Because of the windows having been secured tight in our apartment it seemed to me that I breathed more THC smoke than air. My grandfather had always said that the fumes made me think backwards. However, the feeling in my opinion put me where I need to be. So like every morning, I continued my daily ritual, grabbed 2 stubs, 3 papers and headed up to the rooftop. This particular morning had been somewhat foggy from the steam that arised from the Mississippi wetlands. It was definetley t-shirt weather and I looked forward to the buzz kicking in and sticking until at least 3 period. At just 10 years old I had observed enough weed being smoked to be able to prepare the perfect joint. I layed each paper side by side longways and with charisma broke down each stub and fine mixture of marijuana within the residue laced paper to my create my own 8 inch joint in which I lit up immediately. AFter 6 puffs in I was Faded! My leg went numb from sitting indian style next to the wall and i could hear voices and laughter seeming as if the clouds were making fun of me high. I enjoyed the company and began to smile to myself feeling so relaxed an at ease. Minutes must have flew by before I realized that the joint had continued to burn while I sat amist daydreamig. The ashes had brew to inches long befor i quickly dabbed a lil spit on my finger and crushed them out. Seeing the sun begin to raise over the horizon told me that it was almost time for the 13 block walk to school so unsteadily i stood up and strecthed out preparing for the journey. SHOTS rang OUT as I stood! they seemed to had opened up the early morning air with the smell of hot gun powder, I dropped! MORE shots! The second round illuminated the rooftop all around even where it had remained darkened from the sun having not yet come up! "OH shit!" i heard myself say, feeling as if the world was about to end... gunfire erupting had always had this impact on me. Suddenly, all came to a halt. I made my way to the edge of the 4 foot wall and peered over the roof top. Though it had been extra smokey from the exchange of gunfire I could make out a casuality lying in a puddle of blood dressed in red clothing. Tires screeched from the other end of the building prompting me to rush to the oppsite of the rooftop wall in hopes to catch a view of the other shooter, I did. A light skinned idviudual sped off through the coutryard leaning towards the driverside window. It seemed he had been clutching his chest attempting to keep control of the vehicle as he cut through the backside of the courtyard and onto the next block over dissapearing into the smog...... CHP2 "TO BE Or NOT to Be" was a famous qoute said by some cat centuries ago. It was all I could think of leaving the rooftop making my way downstair to the scene. I moved slowly as if expecting someone to jumpout and grab me as I seen done to so many who witness crimes around the nieghborhood. I had see "Taco" the neighborhhod wino stumbling in on one of the mexican girls being raped and they messed him up so bad he stop drinking, fear had overtaken me. I reached for the bannister to lighten the load of my weight making each step as soft and queit as possible, the rail seemed to get warmer and warmer...... So many memories had come out of this building the 6 years My mother and I had stayed here. I could not remeber much beside the smell of mango trees and the warmth of the sun, at 4 years of age when My Mother had decided to flee the state of Florida and relocated here. I had only overheard the conversations being held by Momma and her best friend Shettah (pronounced Cheddar), whom would gather at different times in the evening and gossip over coffee and fat jays. Shettah had been from Jamaica and her accent was interesting to listen to, for some reason she made me fell as if I had been tuned into a Godfather movie when ease dropping on the two women's gossip. Momma had once described to Shettah the way she had aimed the pistol when she shot my father in the throat. Making a gun gesture with her hand she had acted out at the kitchen table how she unloaded the weapon on him as he stood above drawing back to smack her again. Apparnetly My mother had got invoved with some hatian guy who had enetred the states illegally, this made it hard for him to find work but yet easy for him to fly under the radar of local law enforcements. As a result the hatian Man resorted to robbing and selling narcotics which he later became accustomed to using. His attitude had become voilent and at the end of each day he would always seemed to takeout his short comings and mishaps on my mother. Out of this reltionship I was born. I never seemed to care about having a father because I never had met him and though I knew evryone had had a DAD the things that I knew about this man was enough to make me hate him dearly. My mother was careful never to mention his name around me and for this reason I never inquired. She had been strong enough for me in my book and to me, she was all I needed, My rock. I could tell that Momma had a good thing going in Florida until she had met this man. DIplomas from Florida State unviersity along with sveral trophies had cluttered the living room of our small 1 bedroom apt in the Carmelitos. Momma had come from Nicuargua at the age of 16 and started a new life in Fort lauderdale. A scholarship through academics had landed her at FSU where she later graduated and began working Miami General hostpital. She landed the job through a reference letterwritten by her college basketball coach who had always seen talent in her as a slim tall power forward. Coach would always say how" if ever there was a Woman's NBA league my mother would have been a first round draft pick". Around one of the trophies sitting atop our hand me down coffetable was a letter from her ole coach which said just that. My father and SHe had met during a exbithion basketball game held at broward county's PAnimanian park. Many of the hospital employees would form teams and play aginst one another on the weekends while the neighborhood onlookers viewed the game from the bleacehers which surrounded the court. "Those were the days" My momma would always say, it seemed that allowing my father into her life open her world to excitement, negativity, and a whole bunch of get rich skeems. While I was 2 years old Momma had used my diaper to mule narcotics out of the hospital in which she worked. She would sometimes bring me to work on herdays off to show me off and from what I understand this period was not only a show off period, rather, It was the pick-up phase of one of my father's skeem to get money. The pay off was always what they thought to be worth until the IRS got wind of the situation and audited my mother for having an apartment with two caddilacs and a jetboat on a $30,ooo a year salary, shortly after then the apt was raided and mutiple prescription pills were recovered. Through her savings Momma was able to retain the best lawyer in Miami, Rick LEbias. Libas had defended politicaian and mutiple drug delears so with this case he was able to get my mother off with a dispositon of a teririble record and a hefty fine. The courts agreed to suspend the 15 year prison sentence after my mother had agreed to pay the restituion in full directly after trial. FRom the storys that i had heard she was able to come up with the $60,000 in restitution the same day a Hatian suspect had robbed Miramar national in DAde county. The incident seemed to be the downfall of two. Momma, now pregnant with me began working odd resturaunt jobs while trying to become accustomed to living the low income life that Miami had to offer, very little at all. After the birth ofher only son, Me, life took a sudden change. Momma began to become more independent herself esttem strengthened and her temper grew to be much less tollerant. She told Shetta one day, "Once Artist was born a fucking demon woke up inside me girl, i stop taking evrybody shit that day!". Momma had named me Artist after the famous ball player who was capable doing of anything on the court. Over the years she would tell me, "you go apply your Artist blessing to them books and bring me home some "A"s, but to me the work in school was easy anyhow so I just gave them enough to get by. Moving to Mississippi was gamble for my mother and I but it prooved to be somewhat a good 1. Mother was able to use her degrees to get her a pharmacy position but the pay had been so low and jobs so scarce it still kept us below the poverty line. Mississippi had only done a background check on state crimes so her FElony in Florida failed to show on on her criminal history report and within a month of the living in hotels momma finally found a stable place to call home, Our 1 bedroom apartment in the projects. As i made my way down to the steps to the 6th floor I could now smell a strong smell of smoke, this made me pick up my pace. Reaching the lobby i could see that the old sofa that had sat inthe lobby next to the staircase was filled with holes and burning slowly next to the rail causing a mildewed smokey aroma. Had'nt it not been for the millions of bodily fluids, spills, and who knows whatever else witin the sofas's fabric i'm sure the room would have been in a full ablaze by now. the concrete walls were covered in black soot from the smoke and throught the lobby front door i could see that ANt, donte's brother laid motionless in a puddle of wet red. rushing back up to the first floor I banged on the first door I came too, It was MS. mildred's Apartment. Momma had sent me down to Mildred's apartment when I was younger because she had need a babysitter but after discovering that the older lady would watch soaps and fall asleep the entire time when i was supposed to be being watched mommma decided to leave me home alone. "MS Mildred, Ms Mildred" I banged, she had yet to come to the door after what seemed to be 15 knocks!. The neighbor across the hall opened the door, "WHAts up Art", the short cute redbone said. It had been DEja from My floor. I quickly explained the situation in which she smelled immediately opening the door. on instinct she rushed to the rifridgerator hande me a pitcher of red koolaid while she proceeded to fill up a big chitterling pot full of water. I made it back down the lobby and disspersed the fire with the red koolaid pouring some on each hole, seconds later Daja appeared with the huge pot and soaked the entire couch. "What the fuck happened " she ask as I pointed out the door at ANT. It had always amazed me how a girl could shift into an emotional mode when death took place. Even if the victim was a prefect stranger i seen females become so emotional that you would have thought it was there people whom had been gundown. DEja called the Police from her cellphone crying as if her world was about to end, I just watched. She transformed into full character and though i had been fearful of the whole ordeal I now remained more curious than anything of the reaction of Donte's followers finding Donte's younger brother dead. It was kinda exciting wanting to know what was about to happen next. Deja hung up the phone wiped her tears away and walked back to her apt shaking her head pounding her forehead. At 17 she was beautiful but I had only viewed her being a bitch to Ant rather than caring for him. Deja had dated one of the older members of their gang before so seeing their lifestyle, to her was unattractive. She stayed away from the bloods, hated their style, and communicated with none of them. By the time the Coroner had arrived the block was full of bystanders. Attitudes and tempers were flaring as the bloods prepared their own body bag made from blankets to cover Ants body until the authoritys showed up. The Coroners whom hadsat in their truck until police arrrived 20 minutes later seemed scared to enter the crowd to collect the dead man's body. Profanity came from everywhere cussing the police on how long it had taken for them to respond to the numerous 911 calls within the last hour. More police cars arrived at the scene at soon the scene went from Murder to outrage protestors being calmed by the Gangmembers with guns and badges. the story paints the picture
