Advertising, marketing and promotion are handled differently depending on your service or product. Being a CPA, I have found direct mailing the surrounding towns once or twice a year has enabled me to grow my business. Self promotion through networking has brought in several new businesses.

Advertising, marketing and promotion are handled differently depending on your service or product. Being a CPA, I have found direct mailing the surrounding towns once or twice a year has enabled me to grow my business. Self promotion through networking has brought in several new businesses.
Then again, if you hang out with the right crew at your bi weekly poker game this will bring in new business. This just happened to me last month.
You never know where your new business will come from...... so try several different venues and see where it goes.
There are several ways I am able to get new clients. Over the years I found referrals work best but I also network and do limited direct marketing. Its best to diversify.

I tend to take the more personal approach that both of us are spending time and effort for something that has no tangible benefit to me or my client. I request from my client that a payment schedule of some sort is agreed upon. If that fails there is always small claims court but obviously retaining the client becomes unlikely.

In a more established company an accountant's position in most cases is to handle the tax affairs as well as spotting and anticipating trends so that the company will continue to prosper. Obviously the accountant should be involved in setting up the proper controls, policies and procedures. I give them a choice of what kind of job they want as follows:
WE DO THREE TYPES OF JOBS HEREGOOD, FAST AND CHEAPYOU MAY CHOOSE ANY ONE OF THE THREEIF IT IS GOOD AND FAST IT WILL NOT BE CHEAPIF IT IS CHEAP AND GOOD IT WILL NOT BE FASTIF IT IS FAST AND CHEAP IT WILL NOT BE GOOD

Based on my experiences with the IRS it is better to contact them. For instance the collection department can be disruptive to the individual or business if they do not address the issue by contacting them.
