Which would you suggest to try and bring on board first - an intern or an employee, and why?

It really depends on the job itself, but an intern is clearly the less expensive choice, as most don't get paid. I feel it helps those in college get real life experience before graduation and is very valuable for them. I would only do this for positions where you already have at least one full time employee, like technical positions. I would be caution for positions like Bookkeeping, unless you have experience and time to really monitor them.
