As a sales manager, I have balanced and sometimes fretted over this question. With networking you are spending your time and with advertising you are spending your money. I believe both are necessary but....... are you doing this wisely? I have come to believe in what I call "qualifying or vetting "business leads and advertising. Are you spending your money and your time with networking groups and advertising that will reach real potential customers or are throwing both against the wall hoping something will stick? I recommend to take some time and be a guest before joining any group to get a feel of the makeup of the group. In my case our local chamber has provided the best networking opportunities for drawing local customers.
When considering advertising it all comes down to budget , print , radio and television adds are very pricey. You may consider investing that money into your on-line presence.
I always try to remember or pick up on a hobby, hometown, or fun fact about them and then connect to that when you can,it is always nice to pay attention to small details, clients of mine have been impressed by my remembering these small but imprortant details
