We hand weave cotton, bamboo & wool home and wearable goods. Some of the wool shawls & blankets are created with local sheep farms. We show in some local shops, craft and farmers' markets in the tri-state area.
My parents began Under Mountain Weavers in Salisbury 1973. Master Weaver, Eric Gerstel, Dad, brought 200 year old 72" fly-shuttle looms from Scotland in 1941, where he had gone to textile design school after leaving Austria. He met Mom/Lottie in NYC, originally from Dresden, Germany. After a career in textiles, traveling to mills around the world, they established Under Mountain Weavers, creating tweed jackets, ties & skirts & teaching weaving. Mid 1980s, they sold Under Mountain Weavers to Pinkstons of West Stockbridge, MA. Three decades later my husband, Joe Woodard & I moved our small weaving business onto the family property. At 93, Dad taught Joe weaving on a fly-shuttle loom. Serundipititiously, the Pinkstons asked if we were interested in taking Under Mountain Weaver business back. They then presented us with the original sign that had & now does grace Under Mountain Weavers, just across the road from where it began 40 years earlier.
