I believe the best form of advertising for me has been word of mouth. I enjoy helping a restaurant or small business give an artistic impression of their values. I do this by paintings the size and type of subject matter that generally appeals to all, I keep it small for small spaces, large for the bigger spaces and arrange an agreement with the owner to keep the work up (and only my work) until they feel the need to change. This becomes a personal gallery for me, and I manage the sales, replacements and hanging plus the agreement is "no commission" so I can charge a little less. I get to curate my own paintings in an already beautiful setting and have made everyone happy, including myself, by being generous with the number of paintings I bring in each year to refresh the look.
